Running the trail that encircles the park
shirtless, breaking a sweat
feelin' good
I could go to the gym
push and pull on machines
but why bother?
Running: running is different
there's a sense of purpose
I can go from point A to point B
I can run to the next village
to tell them we've spotted the herd
in those days,
the mind could track the prey
the body could kill it
and the soul could thank the earth
there were still the great questions
the great dilemmas
and the great sorrows
but there was a path
lucent and worthy
Today the path is around the park
there are children on the swingset
and that's good enough for now

I know someone who drives 2 miles to the gym to use the running machine when she could just jog to the gym and back for free. Running seems to be pointless now but it does keep you healthy, I suppose, and,as you say, that's good enough. | Written by beatricelouise (215 comments posted) 8th March 2008 | ~Cute and quirky. Getting back to basics would do us all a bit of good. The idea is to just do it. Whether it is running around the park or running on a treadmill. Who cares! Just keep fit. People who have the machines in their homes don't use them half the time. Sitting on our fannies is so much easier. | Enjoyed Written by KaydieKate (75 comments posted) 3rd August 2008 | | I liked the odd style and the message it held. Very good; though, compared to the end, the beginning seems a little disjointed, but necessary to prove the point. | Thanks Kaydie! Written by Toad (105 comments posted) 3rd August 2008 | It's nice that you've revisited this piece from a few months ago. The disjointed and jumpy style and format are meant to read like the way the speaker's thoughts would be flowing as he runs. The solitude provokes thought, but the motion prevents the thoughts from flowing smoothly. The speaker in the poem values running; views it as an archetypal, organic act which has meaning, rather than a pointless workout for the sake of getting strong or looking good. It's spiritual for him. |
