What makes the doughnut?
It can't possibly be the hole
The jam ones have no hole
So why did they put
the hole in the other ones
was it because they thought
people that don't like jam
are slightly less intelligent
and the only way to let them know
there is no jam
is to put a hole?
is this a poem?
or am I talking out of my hole?
Am I a doughnut?

Punchy, you know perfectly well that the doughnut-with-a-hole was invented so that physicists like Stephen Hawking could use the "torus" shape as an analogy for alternative universes. And so that people like me could say, "It's all right, I can eat lots of them, they have a non fattening centre." |

You obviously watched that prog last night? Fascinating wasn't it , not that I could even get the slightest of grasps on what they were talking about. Mind you if I'm struggling to get a grasp on the shape and purpose of a doughnut i don't stand a chance when it comes to alternative layered universes. paula x Ps. I wondered why I was thinking about doughnuts, thats subliminal advertising at its best. |

| You made me smile, Punchy. Thank God for poets with a good sense of humour! ha ha As for why one has a hole in it and the other one hasn't - well, that must defy science. Perhaps someone with a scientific brain can answer your question. It is a bit like the question on the radio, science programme: When you look in a mirror and see yourself backwards, why don't you also see yourself upside down also? Do you know the answer to that one? There's the subject for another poem. |
I've never understood it either... Written by victoriaplum (5 comments posted) 11th March 2008 |
Maybe the hole is so that you can hold it more easily. But that doesn't make sense, either... I can hold a scone just fine! Well done, this is sweet (even without the jam) x |

Hmm....maybe its a great doughnut conspiracy. They, the doughnut makers, those very clever people, decided to put a hole in them so they could make big-looking tasty snacks yet at the same time save themselves money as there's a huge gaping hole on in the middle! Less dough making! More money! Maybe your average human looks at a doughnut and sees a huge, well, doughnut, yet forgets about the hole! It looks bigger than it actually is. So they minimise cost while maximising profits lol. Hmm, I'm confused now. And I now feel like a jam doughnut. Anyway, very funny poem, great stuff |

| Mr soul , you may be on to something there, It's all about profit, and the jam ones are there purely to draw us in to the conspiracy for when we eat a jam doughnut the unpredictability of where the jam will squirt creates mouthwatering excitement yet anxiety and therefore we see the doughnut with a hole as the perfect solution, EUREKA!! |

| Its all starting to make sense now lol, those clever doughnut makers, they've really hooked us in. Yet there's no escaping, those damn doughnuts are tasty......haha, what an unusual yet interesting topic of conversation lol |

Wonderful fun, witty, and thought provoking. However, I feel we are asking the wrong question - shouldn't we be concentrating on why they built the doughnut round the hole? Or stuffed a once existing hole with jam? How can we ever hope to reveal the machiavellian machinations of these fiendish bastards. And somewhere a voice cried sleep no more. Cheers Brett |

Enjoyed this P. I don't mind the holes in donuts - but I hate bagels. A donut is fine, nothing falls through the middle. Try a sandwich fashioned with a bagel though..... Phil |
Bagels Written by punchy (504 comments posted) 13th March 2008 |
Don't even get me started on bagels Phil. It is a case of weighing up between do I have the the tuna mayo filling which when mixed with the texture of the bagel is delish but then their is that heart stopping moment when you take that bite which causes the entire filling to fall out the centre. Why do they do this to us, is life not stressfull enough? |
