An everyday story of business folk:

GROUPTHINK

The team is in the bar with a flipchart
drinking margharitas at five o'clock
devising a new Vision for our Brand.

It should be the best product on the market
the most recognised name in its sector
the best seller, with the major Share of Mind.

We contemplate the bullet points we've listed,
agree that they distil the very essence
of the factors critical for our success.

Then one of us takes up the magic marker
and scribbles on a fresh page of paper
"Team Vision" inscribing, in red, below:

Not just business folk I guess... Politicians don't seem very different unfortunately.

Stab! Feel Sick!

Frankly it reminded me of MYSELF - in another context. While I don't think like that consciously or voice it, I wonder if that's what I am really saying when I talk smart or clever in group discussions of any kind (which I love). I wonder how many people actually thought that of me, gagged inwardly, but not told me.

I feel ill.

Consider me engaged!

What I like here is the tableau of a flipchart-style meeting which we can all identify with. Many poems are too personal to engage a casual reader (nothing wrong with this - writing can be great therapy!) But it's always good to read something that makes you think, "I know just where you're coming from." This is one of those.
How right

I'm afraid you are so very very right Veronica. Human nature doesn't change, whether you are working in a garden or in a "groupthink" training programme. They want you all to think alike, until opinions change and they teach you something new. They work on the belief that nobody wants to stand out as being different from anyone else. Watch the ones who do - they're the trouble makers! ha ha. As a teacher of business studies, I can tell you that you feed them questions that will give you the answers that YOU want from them. Get it?

I suppose such exercises are useful now and then , but they certainly leave a lot of debris lying around

Nicely caustic
