In order to make our disaffected youth feel more apart of the caring
sharing UK PLC it has been suggested that they swear an oath of
allegiance, a little like the one that new British Citizens swear.
Here's how it could play out in reality....
Sullen hooded youf of no fixed opinion. "Wot ? Me fookin' swear wot ?"
Smarmy suited official of HM Government. "An oath of allegiance to her Majesty the Queen."
Sullen hooded mate of sullen hooded youf of no fixed opinion. "Fook that ! Wots alleejance ?"
Sullen hooded youf of no fixed opinion. "Fooked if ahh know."
Smarmy suited official of HM Government, sotto voce. "F*** !"

I think that for once the sullen, hooded youth may have a point. Swear allegiance? My arse. Phil |

Hi Phil and Mia are you suggesting that we place your posterior on the throne Phil ? FNARR FNARR. Happy to have given you a good laugh Mia, but really the credit goes to the goofy lord who suggested the whole preposterous idea in the first place. Its a pity the Gordy Broon is shite at stand up comedy, most of his policies are laughable.... John_O |

Hm... Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. It has been shown again and again how easily youths can be influenced. Will people let them be brainwashed by MTV, gangsta rap and hooliganism or teach them about respect, diligence and loyalty? I think there can be more to this than it just being a silly remark by a PM. |
NOT SUCH A BAD IDEA? Written by Phil (6387 comments posted) 18th March 2008 |
I don't think swearing allegiance to any member of that particular family could teach anyone about respect, diligence and loyalty. Swearing at them is different matter entirely. As a nation, do we really want to model ourselves on a group of inbred, over privileged, morons who do nothing to deserve their position? I don't think so (clearly) Phil |
allegiance to the queen Written by mia_ms_kim (891 comments posted) 18th March 2008 |
When I was naturalised as an Australian as a teenager, I think I had the option of swearing allegiance to the Queen. I didn't. I have no ill feeling towards the royal family. The Queen is not someone I would scoff at, but I didn't see what my allegiance to my newly adopted country had to do with the nice lady who lived on a difference continent. I would love to know what the overall attitude in UK is towards the royal family. Mia |
UK PLC Written by John_O (138 comments posted) 19th March 2008 |
Hi Fm, and Phil and Mia again To be sure if we made our society more inclusive then maybe our more disaffected youth would be errr less disaffected. But the sad truth is we are a much more divided nation now than for many decades; divided by ever growing wealth/poverty differential, divided by educational opportunity (see wealth/poverty) and divided as to whether we even want a constituional monarch (see Phil, or maybe not!). If Gordy Broon and his lickspittle cabinet were to actually do something about these divisions then an oath of allegiance might work for a significant proportion of the youth of UK PLC, but right now most of us don't own 'shares' in UK PLC so we see no point in a vacuous piece of theatre. Phils position on thiis is quite clear. Me, I see the Royals as a once shining piece of nostalgia, now tarnished by scandals and ill advised utterances. As a nation we don't actually need a monarch but they are nice to have in the cabinet to roll out when some odious foreign leader needs to be greeted with a level of diplomacy that most of us cannot muster but royals do so well ! Most people in the UK would probably whole heartedly support the Queen, frown a bit about the rest of them but wouldn't consign them to the bin of history - we do like a bit of pageant we Brits. But then, by simple majority purchasing, we also like the vile chemical concoction that the breweries call lager.....nuff said. John_O PS I had no idea a five minute scibble would generate such a flurry of opinions. I guess that's the pwoer of unrestricted words. |
Odious Foreign Leader duty Written by fortunato364 (21 comments posted) 21st March 2008 |
Interesting point about whether anyone else could meet and greet the OFL's. I think that's where we're going wrong. Perhaps if they were met at the airport by someone living in a small rented flat or bedsit, driven back in a Reliant Robin for a fish and chip supper, a few drinks and a DVD, they might be easier to negotiate with. Think of the treaties you could get signed after a couple of bottles of Casillero del Diablo! As for the oath of allegiance I think it a great idea. Then the little buggers could smash windows and mug old ladies in the name of the Queen.

Its a bum job and some Royals got to do Written by John_O (138 comments posted) 25th March 2008 |
Hi F and A now then F you could be an advisor to Gordy Broon, your brand of cutting down all expenditure is just so in line with his Gordenomics, fun! Bah! Humbug! Keep laughing A, the alternatives are just so disappointing. Thanks for recording your views. John_O PS is Casillero the modern Blue Nun? |
