NLP'd better
By punchy
18 March 2008

My neuro's are mended
linguistics were used
To programme my mind
Which was torn and abused

A quick fix, a defrag
A subconscious cleanse
And now I am happy
And so are my friends

I now have the answers
I now have the edge
A career to pursue
Instead of a ledge

Sceptics they say
Its brainwashing tripe
But why suffer anguish
depression and fright

My Subconscious mind
Has reloaded my thoughts
And shown me the lessons
I should have been taught

Yes. Paula, dear old Bandler does have a lot of answers, though he never claims to be right. My favourite quote of his "Lose your mind and come to your senses"
You seem to have a good understanding of NLP and I thought that last verse summed it all up really well. Glad it's working for you
I think the edge is a Tony Robbins concept and a bit too in your face and "American" for me, but as he pinched most of his stuff from Bandler it's all valid. Have you heard of Wayne Dyer he's a bit like Robbins but without all that acreage of teeth. He's more laid back
It I didn't say before, nice poem

Although I am a practitioner now I still have trouble distinguishing Bandler from Grinder, I have sooo much reading to do.
I guess as cheesy as Robbins is if it works for most then great but yes the cringyness puts me off big time.
Thanks for review

...What is NLP?

Written by Bottleblondesurfer (3445 comments posted) 18th March 2008
You're obviously more involved in it than me if you're a practitioner. I've really only taken in as much as I felt would help me.
It's all good stuff though. I do have a friend who is a bit 'fundamentalist' about it. He went to a Robbins seminar in London. He was a bit disappointed with Robbin's performance.English audiences don't 'whoop' on cue.
It might be an idea to give it a less cryptic title.I'm wondering if it might put people off

Nice poem. I usually apply the abbreviation for Natural Language Processing (Computational Linguistics), rather than Neuro-Linguistic Programming though...

I think the good thing about NLP (the thing you describe) is that it helps people to look at things from a different angle and gives them a boost of positive energy. The downside though is that it seems to me like too quick a solution. It probably depends on who teaches it, but I often find that people taking such courses cling to their newly found optimism so desperately that it seems unnatural.

It's usually a good start, but not a magic wand.

"cling to their newly found optimism so desperately that it seems unnatural."

Yes, well it beats the hell out of desperately clinging to old ingrained pessimism and I'm all in favour of not being natural. Taking anti-biotics is unnatural; cancer is natural and surviving it is unnatural I think we should all strive to be as unnatural as it suits us.
And,as Paula could tell you better than me, NLP doesn't claim to be a magic wand it just says you might find this useful.
Don't be too quick to dismiss,Fledermaus it's not scary.
Quick fix

A lot of people have expressed the same feelings as you as far as quick fix goes but I have to disagree. There are techniques within NLP that help to establish the route of a problem in an effective and quick way but because their is no drudging up of old problems and re experiencing all the negative emotions it is a far more gentle and effective way of dealing with self limiting decisions or phobias, habits etc. I can only speak from experience as far as I have for over the years tried every therapy going short of drugs and having gone through the torture of councilling therapy, cbt which all have their place ,nothing even touched on the powerful and unbelievable difference that NLP and time line therapy has had. If something can be fixed quick then why the hell not, I don't enjoy suffering and I don't think many people if given the choice would choose to suffer over feeling good even if it appears unnatural.
Sorry I'm going on a bit aren't I!

Hi BBS and Punchy.
Note that I did not reject anything. I just said that it's a start and not magic. One can use this positive energy to solve problems and become truly happy, yet some people cling to this temporary happy feeling, look away from their problems and are shocked once it turns out life is not perfect after all. It all depends on what people do with all this positive energy.

What I meant with unnatural is when people tell everyone they are so happy, but meanwhile they are terribly afraid that their happy feeling will be spoilt. I think that if one is truly happy, one cannot be afraid and if one is afraid, one cannot be truly happy. That is what I meant with desperately clinging and unnatural...

I did not in any way mean that this goes for everyone using NLP, but I did notice it goes for some people.

I think I need some of that! I like the idea of defragging your mind. Well put. I hope you are saying that this technique really works for you - if so, fantastic!
