A day in 1971. The fighting had ceased and the curfew lifted. I went to the maidan in the middle of Dacca where I came across an old temple. Inside I found the dog and she delivered 5 pups as I watched. I was in quite an emotional state and felt an affinity with her; and the fact that she'd brought these pups into the world when all around us people were killing each other had a profound almost mystical effect on me. I felt that something had been revealed....... One day in that bloody civil war
In an old temple on the maidan,
A pye dog gave birth at my side.
And for an instant -
A corner of the veil lifted.

I once saw a blade of grass growing in a tiny crack between concrete pavement and asphalt road. It was even sprouting a little nameless flower. It was an "revelation" to me. Since then I decided that "life" was the most powerful force on earth. Despite everything we do to destroy each other and the earth, life will find a way. (But I really hope we don't nuke ourselves and our planet out of existence.) I sometimes get the same feeling from a really, good well crafted haiku such as those of Basho which along with vibrant rainbows and the caustics you get in teacups when the sun is right, birth, coincidences etc etc -make my spine tingle! |
