Before anyone feels the need to tell me, I do know what Easter is about, its chocolate isn't it?
Hot cross buns and Easter eggs
Boxes filled with air
Packaging and promises
What relevance is there?
Greedy kids , feeling sick
A chocolate stuffing feast
Did someone mention Jesus
Was he some kind of priest?
Just a celebration
Of how much we can spend
Indulge ourselves with nonsense
For a purpose we pretend

Yes big business and mammon does seem to have to taken over the feast of Easter and I for one can only applaud that. The more secular it becomes, and the less there is of religious influence the better. I am always relieved to see religion consigned to the back seat and irrelevance. Don't forget when religion was important and held sway, it was called the dark ages. Anyway a fun little poem for all that | Written by Fledermaus (3487 comments posted) 21st March 2008 | It may well have existed before Christianity reached these lands. That's where the eggs and the hares come from. For Christians it must be rather ironic that Christmas has become more important than Easter, for wasn't the whole core of Christianity the idea that Jesus was a living God that sacrificed himself to rid humanity of the original sin? Nicely done. | Written by Phil (6959 comments posted) 21st March 2008 | Fun piece - point well made. I'm still trying to work out why the pope (or whoever) has decided that Easter is to be so early. I heard it was something to do with the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. No superstition there then. Phil | Hello Punchy Written by Josie (2845 comments posted) 22nd March 2008 | | Punchy, I didn't see what you getting at on first reading. I have read again and see clearly. You are, no doubt, asking yourself, as we all are the same question; What has overindulgence got to do with a religious festival? You are right, and, according to the news today, this over-indulgence and spoiling of children is leading to lots of problems from the moment children enter school. I lived in the war years where sweets and chocolates were rationed, and Easter to me was going on the slow, slow steam train to Bridport to see my grandparents, and especially seeing the banks of primroses and meeting my cousins at the other end. We went to the Easter service and had one chocolate Easter egg - but how we enjoyed life! Yes, "Was Jesus some kind of priest?" - No he wasn't, but they don't bother to find out I'm afraid. |
