Dagestan According to the good Lord
By Steve_K
25 March 2008
6 Russian Soldiers beheaded in Dagestan by an Islamic group that had crossed the border, the 6 were students, conscripts to the army....

The trees sway

Wind shook and black

The bird’s summer song

Stopped dead in its tracks

Only the sound of 6 mens heartbeats

Thumping out their hidden quandaries

They are bound

Hands and feet

Fatigued figures

In the August heat

How August their deaths

While lying on sheets

Then a sudden slice

Deep and foul

Once reaching spine

The end of vowel

He struggles in pain

Amid laughing howls

As a cow being drained

He’s left to bleed

Reciting prayers

In common creed

The young man passes

Love

Religion’s forgotten need

Powerful stuff. I really enjoyed the rhyme, it was unpredictable and off beat which worked really well and kept it lighter which made it easier to follow.
"The end of vowel" great line.

Effective piece. rhyme. Punchy mentioned the unpredictable rhyme. I think it worked well too. I fact there were a few (deliberate) jarrings in this that added to the feel of the piece.

Ugly, a little disturbing, successful.

Very touching and sad. I've actually been to Dagestan (just before the war broke out). So many sad things have happened in that region since then...
