The Beauty of Bridge
By jean.day
29 October 2005
Having played bridge since I was 10 - and taught it for the last 30 years, off and on, I feel that everyone should give it a go.

THE BEAUTY OF BRIDGE

The beauty of bridge is the thrill of each hand
Disclosing  potential for play
Not only the pleasure of counting your points
And even if low - no dismay-

For Bridge is  more than just winning  tricks
More than just making a game.
It's the careful campaign and the measured finesse
For no hand is ever the same.

You take out your trump and lose losers first
Assuming defenders will let you.
You cross ruff with care, keeping entries intact.
The opponents will try hard to set you.

Each trick has its value, each hand has its fun
Why don't you all now take its measure.
Those who have started will not soon forget
It's not just a game, it's pure pleasure.

It's a tactical arena
Though each skirmish don't last long
But it's just as mean (or meaner!)
As Chess, Poker and Mah Johnng
(boom-boom!) :grin :grin
