Waiting for Inspiration
By owlhoot
02 April 2008
Sometimes it just gets personal!

Well... here I sit...
waiting for inspiration to drop in
like a hoped for visit
from a friend I'd like to come again.
My pen sits idle poised and ready
to catch a fleeting thought
while my hand lies steady
resting on the paper I bought.

Inspiration must be a fickle friend!
When she's near my mind is filled
with the visions that she'll send.
When she visits me I'm thrilled.
But I find she doesn't stay for long
nor come as often as I'd like.
Perhaps I'm looking at it wrong
and she's not really fickle but impolite.

Yet still I'll sit and wait a while
for her time's more valuable than mine.
If I told her what I thought she'd smile
and show me my next line.
So dutifully I hold my pen
and sit waiting for her word.
Perhaps she'll visit me again,
or perhaps she'll go unheard.

You're more likely to find inspiration for a poem when it is the last thing on your mind. Get on with your day and you'll catch a phrase, read something in the newspaper etc and you will feel inspired. Sitting and waiting is often a waste of time.
Nice

A clever musing on the Muse. Yours is a mild-mannered one - Have a look through the back catalogue for Talisker's piece, Dawn Raid. http://www.greatwriting.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6739&Itemid=77

Nothing wrong with considering the ways of the mind. Sometimes it produces a thoughtful piece like this one.
I am inspired...

by this piece, inspired to write. I don't know why some pieces do that to me. I so relate to this. This is exactly what I do, with a pen and my journal and I wait, sometimes reading a couple of pages from my current favourite book. To me it is a religious practice as well as an attempt to hone my inner compass and to align myself to it each day. Although inspirations strike me from all kinds of places, I also wait for it.

I like the way you refer to inspiration as 'she', elusive, perhaps even as a semi-divine entity. I believe all inspiration is, a kind of a voice that accompanies revelation, who visits the person who has prepared himself for it, but it cannot be taken for granted.

I found this poem very inspiring.

When I write it flows... or not at all. Some perhaps would call it a gift. I choose to call it inspiration. Being a male, I do tend to find inspiration in the female gender of course. Sexist perhaps. What do you expect from a cowboy? :grin
