The differences between us
were clear as water, sharper than sulphur
thickening air. You revelled in the hottest pool,
eyes closed, skin blushing
red as cherries. I too rose pink,
for other reasons. There were too many eyes
and not enough towels. I liked the cool pools,
free from grinning city lights,
the wide arms of the lake. Topless women.
The warmth that overwhelmed,
left me drunk.
Stumbling out
my pores gasped, dizzy. The cold slap
of feet on concrete, winter wind.
We kept our heads above water,
filled the two-hour limit, no more.
In the changing rooms women strode
more naked than I’d ever been.
I changed in a toilet cubicle,
limbs slack. And with creased fingers
folded the swimsuit
that has never seen the sea.

Ah , the shaky isles ... Written by patterjack (1314 comments posted) 2nd April 2008 | and their warm springs ? I like this one GK patterjack | Written by Veronica_Milvus (698 comments posted) 3rd April 2008 | "more naked than I've ever been" a great line, i know exactly what you mean. I got the sense of the place really nicely. Where were you? Iceland? "sharper than sulphur" also a lovely alignment of words. A really good one! | Written by gutterkitty (362 comments posted) 4th April 2008 | By "shaky isles" you'd be referring to NZ? And if so, you'd be right. Thanks PJ, your compliments are (as ever) appreciated. Thanks again VM- I'm currently attempting NaPoWriMo (writing one poem every day for a month) and it's nice to feel like I've gotten off to a promising start. | Stinky Written by patterjack (1314 comments posted) 4th April 2008 | Did you know that they are doing a 4 year study on the effects on the inhabitants at Rotorua of the sulphuretted hydrogen given off by the hot springs? Maybe it would be more of a stimulus than sniffing petrol ? And a poem a day for a month ! -- I shudder at the thought of this assemby line extremism But if it produces poems like your last two -- go for it ! patterjack |
