Two distant figures in the mist of a long ago Florida evening.

Rosy mist rises
curling like the fronds
of a prehistoric fern
back before the sun went down
on the dawn of time.
Evening overshadows the fields
as the sun retreats to an unseen demise
somewhere in the dark.
In the misty twilight
two distant figures walk
side by side
like mysterious shadows in the field.
Who could they be,
these two twilight sojourners
crossing the evening grass?

Wandering minstrels from a bygone age
preparing performances to come
before an appreciative lord?

Perhaps a couple of worn out soldiers
returning from a distant country
to a home unstained by battle's dread.

Or are they farmers
on their way to eat a hard earned meal
after a day of labor and much talk?

They might be hunters
leaving the woods with all its game
unharmed by their intentions.

Future lovers walking side by side
who might want to hold hands,
but haven't yet found the courage to dare?

Who are these vanishing shadows
melting into the gloom?

Such are the mysteries of life.
Little hints and suspicions of things
not known about
incite our curiosity.

Answers are a guessing game
until we investigate carefully our clues.
Sometimes it's simply more fun
to wonder about them.

I really liked this poem. I could clearly see it through the eyes of the poet, and almost see into his mind as he conjured up images and as he pondered about the two shadowy figures in the twilight. I found myself wondering with strange intensity as well. I found the analytical mode of the last two stanzas took away from that "mood" for me. I wonder if they could have been just put into the intro to explain rather than into the body of the poem... But still, I liked it very much. I, too, sometimes observe ordinary strangers, and wonder.... Lovely.
