Family Album

A young girl and her sisters lie in fresh cut hay,
A handsome soldier stands before the barn,
A young boy stretches up to grasp his mothers arm,
A daughter and her daughter smiling greet the break of day.

These fragments of a life may frame the tale,
But writ across them runs a second text.
Traditions acted out before the flaming range,
Cross generations through the female line.
The rules of duty, service, purpose and enduring faith
Sound out the slow and steady rhythms of her life
And bind the past and future into one.

Why do I think of Thomas Hardy -- and daguerrotypes ?

I must be too old !

Did you deliberately use writ in lieu of written -- it does keep the spirit of the old , I guess

flaming jars as slightly slangily bathetic

But it is a very good piece

What a way to express one's toughts about family history! I think this short piece captures so much in so few lines. "Cross generations through the female line." says so much about the matriarchs in the family, mothers and grandmothers, who glue the family and generations together. I can go on and on about each line, but I won't. Wow. Wonderful! (But I didn't understand "the flaming range" bit.)

as a Rayburn owner I had no problems with the flaming range (I've called mine worse than that on occasion). I thought this worked very well. The last 3 lines I thought very effective.

Yes, I agree with mia. I couldn't have put it better. Yes, please explain what you were thinking about when you wrote "flaming range."
