Martin Luther King

Ok, I couldn't let this day go by without marking it. It is the 40th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, a man I've always admired. So this is something I've written about him.

Gunned down and killed by a corrupted will

Torn down and drilled, yet your duty filled

Hands that were red still covered in blood

And the dead, in angry waters still flood.

But hope was at hand in the form of one man

He dreamt of a plan, of a new promised land.

A place of sound for the death, of sight to the blind

That place we are closer, but have still yet to find.

His bravery and strength, though rewarded with wrath

Has guided our hearts and lain down our path.

This struggle is ours, a struggle we all must win

God bless your soul, Martin Luther King.

Good for you for marking it, And a deserved cause indeed!
I struggled slightly with the rhythm, a couple of lines I felt could be shortened so it reads easier. The second to last line was a squeeze as were a couple of others but still a good read.

Didn't know today was an anniversary - so well done for marking it.

Don't know a great deal about the man, so difficult to comment much on the content. Punchy is right about the rhythms, some are a little awkward and the syntax in line four was there to fit the rhyme rather than the meaning - I think. I did find the chronology of the piece
a little unusual too.

A poem all in double spacing, with no division between the verses, and no full stops to end the sentences? Also no structure and no metre. For me, I just do not like this. This is before I even begin to read the content. Why do you write like this? Why don't you sometimes try an interesting piece in the non-fiction side. You could really go to town and make this subject so interesting.
