What if
By punchy
04 April 2008

What if we chose to suffer fools
And submit ourselves to gloom
What if we thought of what we've missed
And focused just on doom

What if we only saw the things
We wished we hadn't done
What if we thought that who we're with
Was not the perfect one

What if we lived our life's regrets
As though they're not our fault
And spent our years in search of what
Our parents never taught

And what if we blame everyone
Except our state of mind
Would we find the happiness
That we chose not to find?

I doubt it. Happiness doesn't come that way.

A philosopher as well as an imbiber of ardent liquor; Paula I'm becoming smitten.
This poem has the most accessible of rhythms, that of the ballad, yet its content is far from the traditional folk-tale we associate with the genre.
I'm sure that most of us have asked ourselves the majority of these questions at some point in our lives. I try not to suffer fools, but then again I start to think that my friends have to suffer me.
A succinct piece with a positive attitude; a few more people could do with a kick up their emotional arses.

Cheers

I don't think Josie has quite read this right.

Just a small point, but I think the punctuation of question marks would work this time.

All the best

Yes Josie, happiness is something we choose to find.

Thankyou Brett, I bet your friends don't suffer you but revel in your uniqueness and fondness of liquor which is in itself a celebration of life! You certainly make me smile x

A very positive sentiment, and very well expressed. So many people are focussed on what might have been.
Nice one!

I like "wisdom" poetry, one that makes me to pause and consider life. This is good for people in early 30's to early 40's, I think, who are old enough to consider those questions honestly and young enough to redeem the rest of their lives (although we can do that at any age). This is a thought-provoking piece because it is simply put, I think. Each line compels me to ask myself "do I do that?"

The 3rd stanza made me think harder. It's important to acknowledge our faults so we can move on. But sometimes our life's regrets (depending on how one interprets it) orginate in someone else's wrongdoing. We do suffer injustice through no fault of our own at times, and some people do suffer under parents who simply should not be parents. This fact can be acknowledged by the sufferer and forgiven, but not excused and brushed aside, if he/she is to look to the future, in my opinion.

A good piece that made me stop and ponder... Thank you, punchy.

happiness is something we choose to find - especially when despondency comes a-knocking at the door. (In the form of a crazed boss.)

With you there PP.

Mia, thankyou. I agree we are not always at fault when it comes to suffering injustice at the hands of our parents but I do believe without brushing aside we can take huge learnings from their mistakes and behavior and better our own lives.Once we take control and responcibility for our own happiness ,it's their to find.
My happiness tonight lies in a bag of quavers, a snickers bar and a bottle of Merlot and I choose to enjoy :grin

Phil, cheers! x

and cheese; applewood preferably. My favourite grape at the moment though is pinot, the South Africans have a blend, Pinotage, that I would convert to Catholicism for if they so much has handed out a sip at communion.

Enjoy your tipple. I'm on the Jameson's at the moment, cheers.

A thought provoking piece. Enjoyed the challenge to ponder on the what if's. I thought the fact that we should look inside of ourselves and put the blame where it ought to be put was spot on. Have a good one! :grin

I will sit on a high bar stool, wearing a posh frock, and sip cocktails, mysteriously.

Agreed, your verse is blooming.
