Concerning the cutting off of Van Gogh's ear....The last two lines were his final words as he lay dying on a hospital bed from a gunshot wound to the chest

The yellowed petals awry

Like a silent wind had blown

And shaken out their life

The browns of the heads

Betraying all inside

Dark as the night

That devours the day

No sign of blood on canvas

Done in a blackened room

This deed that reveals

Wrapped in a beige cloth

The kindliest present of all

‘La tristesse durera toujours’

The sadness will last forever...

Sad (mad?) genius. I read he might have suffered from lead poisoning from the paint, thus his mental deterioration, the effect on his work, and the tragic end. His last words remind me of a young colleague of mine, who said wistfully to me years ago, 'there is no such thing as happiness, only different degrees of sadness.' I found that so sad.
