Whatever Happened to
Greasy Freds Chippy?
anyone know?

Around here I've got
the Mandarin, Balti Spice,
Bangkok Rose and
Gino's, The Arak House and
Demi's delight, even got a chippy,
an Iraqi chippy of course,
don't do fish n chips,
don't do pie n chips and
hamburgers are a big no no,
but you can spoil yourself
with kebab n chips or a pizza.

just another sign of decline I think
the takeaway takeover is almost complete,
British? what the hell is British
in our delightful multicultral land,
I wonder what happened to Greasy Freds?

Just seen my first Halal chippy open down the road from here. It must be where the locals go out for an 'English.' I'll stick with the Indian.

I know where I'll take you Bernie

We've got some very good fish and chip shops here in Yorkshire (noted for it as you probably know). The best one for you to visit Bernie is Bizzy Lizzy's at Skipton. They've won no end of awards. The best chips I am afraid are the ones that are cooked in beef dripping - no matter how many calories are in them. Harry Ramsdens' have slipped well back. They became too adventurous and moved into too many countries. No, when you come to visit me in Yorkshire, I must take you to Bizzy Lizzy's. www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/stayat/carltonhouse/index.htm (You can't beat British cooking).

Try Spain.

Bernie, have you posted something similar to this before?

All the best,
Steve.

A very interesting observation. As an immigrant to Sydney oz, I used to look for authentic ozzie food or something equivalent. It's very hard to find. We have to go to the beach for fish and chips, McDonalds or Burger King for hamburgers, and I haven't seen pie and chips anywhere for a long time. And a local sandwich shop recently closed down, and a Vietnamese noodle shop opened up, and doing so well.

Any sushi shops over in Britain? Here sushi's are taking over. I feel sorry for the elderly white Australians, who can't really take to strong flavour of the foreign foods. There is little for them to choose from for a quick bite when they are out for a stroll.

Mia :sigh

I am an elderly white Australian -- and my choice for a birthday tea was Thai !!!
And you would know , Mia , that Concord Road and my own street are chock full of ethnicity as far as food is concerned . Italian Greek Indian Korean Chinese Polish & Israeli even . Not too many of the old style fish and chip shops around though there are some -- and sushi trains too -- but pies are readily available and some good ones at that ! And there is always the Outback Steak House !

I think that one of the great things that immigration has brought to Oz is the wonderful variety of tastes in tucker avaialble now.

And as for the immigrants themselves -- the ones who live in our complex are charmingly courteous , friendly and helpful

Viva the mix !

I'm so glad you had Thai for your birthday tea. I love Thai, spiced up with lots of red chili! I recently discovered Indonesian - yum yum yum!!! I should try Israeli. Are they kosher? Do they let in Gentiles? I love pies with steak pieces in them with yummy gravy sauce. I used to order them from a work colleague who lived in Neutral Bay. I should hang out on Concord Rd more. And I should really try the Steak House, too.

You are a citizen of the world, patterjack. (And thank you. I'm very grateful to be welcomed into oz. My parents never forgot oz was so good to them when they spoke little English and had little to contribute. They are grateful to have raised and educated their children here.)

I once had to cook for an elderly white ozzie couple in church (the husband was not well), and I was told they don't eat anything but ozzie food. What is ozzie food? So I ended up buying pre-prepared veal and frying it for them. It was sad. I wanted to give them Korean Chop Suey.

Ahhh... someone should do a poem on food.

Mia ;) - Sorry Bernie, for writing an essay on your work space.
thanks to
