Rayong (Milton Keynes), Thailand

Late, late night

Whiskey soaked lips

Words elusive as thoughts

Finally finding a Thai bar

The go go girls smile

We drink and surmise

While deep in conversation

The go go girls are guys

The next bar, bona fide

Filipina Karaoke tangible

Singing ourselves into soberness

I feel helicopters in my head

I go back ‘home’ to the cold feel

Of the steel floors and walls

To the solitude and contempt

None of which I am allowed express

I'm assuming this is another glimpse into your life as a seaman? "Whiskey soacked lips", "helicopters in my head", I thought, were strong imageries. They convey such sadness in the intoxication. I take it the 4th stanza is the ship. I don't understand the "contempt" bit, but the deep loneliness comes across very strongly. If I'm reading this right, I hope this is not an everyday experience of all seamen. It sounds very lonely. But a strong piece like all your poems are.

Thanks mia and maipenrai for your comments, much appreciated. Yes Mia, this is yet another glimpse into that world. And no this is not an everyday experience, for me a I think about more when after having had a few too many.

Cheers maipenrai, I have to say Rayong has been the shitest place I've been, I hated it, hence the Milton Keynes reference. I found it really ugly and seedy. 'Memories of the Land of Smiles'...I don't think so, beneath that smile is cruelty. Thanks for the comment again though mate.
cheers steve

Yeah Bernie, I think I may have used the word shit improperly. I've been to Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania...now that was a shit place. I think Rayong was shit in that it made me angry ie. to go into one bar and see about 30 women sitting on sofa's watching TV behind a large glass pane. Men then went up to a microphone and picked the number of which woman that they wanted (the women were wearing stickers with numbers on them). I exited that place fairly lively lest I hit one of the men. Truly sickening sight. But yes I have been to many places shittier but not in seedy sense of shit! Cheers...

Understand what you mean re the bars and the girls, I ran a non-girlie bar in Pattaya for three years, a disaster in economic terms, no girls=no customers=Bernie losing the bar!!!!!

I think , don't know what I think on this one to be truthful, I used to have heated discussions with a Thai Mate, he blamed the western tourist for the sex trade, when I pointed out that the biggest exploitors of thai women were the thai's he used to get well upset.
the fact is that this type of thing as been going on in thailand forever, go down south and you will see just what you describe and it's all thai run.

never been to Dar-es Salaam but I will say that Monrovia or Freetown are places not to put on your "places to visit list" :grin
