Mickledy-Me (A poem for children)
By Josie
12 April 2008

Mickledy Me really is very popular with children as many children have invisible friends so they tell me. http://www.whiteheadm.co.uk/html/mickledy_me.html#Me2 (voice recording).

Mickledy Me

           I’ve a mystery friend that you’ll never see -
He’s an invisible boy that’s often with me.
I can see him right now - he’s there in my sight –

This strange little person might give you a fright.

When I asked him his name, he said: "Mickledy-Me" –
It’s a very strange name, you will surely agree.
With his lovely red hair and funny green face,

He’s probably come here from far out in space.

My parents can’t see him, but I certainly can.
He lands on the table and eats all the jam.
He dives in the sugar bowl and makes me laugh,
And he hides the soap when I’m taking a bath.

He jumps on the bed when I’m trying to sleep
When nobody’s looking he’ll shout out "Peep peep".
My parents look puzzled, but there’s no more sound.
It’s so strange to hear noises when no-one’s around.

I’ve tried to explain him to Mum and to Dad –
But they, I am sure, think I’m going quite mad.

My schoolfriends believe me, there isn’t a doubt,
Though there’s trouble and happiness when he is about,

Your character seems to have many names and to appear in many different times and places, as he is mentioned in the folklore and mythology of many countries. Always a good excuse when something goes wrong... Gnomes, fairies, goblins, pixies, leprechauns, a mischievous bunch, those Little People. No wonder children like them.

You are right Fledermaus. There are many of them, but there is only one that is called Mickledy-Me, for sure. Whenever anything goes wrong, or I can't find my keys etc etc, I know for certain who it is. One mother told me she heard her daughter talking to herself in her bedroom, threatening to put someone down the toilet. Guess who she was talking to? This is absolutely true. There's another strange creature due to show itself forth very soon. Wait till you hear its name. Glad you are amused - you are still a little boy at heart, I know.

I know Mickledy-Me, and this is my very favourite poem Josie.
