Romeo and Elizabeth; part one
By PurpleFairy
14 April 2008
William sat down at his computer. Flicked on the monitor and signed into online messaging service. Almost instantly a window popped up.

Hi Romeo!! I really missed you today. I had another argument with Karen. L

William quickly tapped out his response.

It’s ok honey. You can talk to me.

----------

Elizabeth was sitting at the kitchen table, eating dinner with her parents. They were talking about her mum’s work but Elizabeth couldn’t concentrate on what they were saying. Her mind was focused on her computer. It was just sitting there. In her room. Waiting for her to come back to it and she longed to satisfy its need.

“Beth, aren’t you hungry?” Her proper name was Beth, but she preferred Elizabeth. It sounded posher, more romantic.

“Actually, I’m feeling a bit ill. I think I’ll just go lie down.” Elizabeth mumbled to her parents, quickly scooping up her plate and cutlery and dumping them on the side board.

She tried to be convincing so she trudged slowly up the stairs, even though every once of her was screaming for her to run.  She closed her door with a sharp tap and sat down at her computer. Urgency being replaced with relieve, she was finally back. In it’s friendly embrace.

As the computer was turning on, Elizabeth was thinking about Karen. Their argument today had been about how Karen didn’t trust Romeo. She was just jealous Elizabeth thought.

Hi honey, how are you feeling my sweet?

Elizabeth sighed; as long as she had Romeo she didn’t need any other friends.

Hi!! Dinner was boring without you. How are you? Aww, I missed you to. I’m good, better now you’re here. I really want to hold you in my arms.

A surge of pleasure rushed through Elizabeth’s body. She was breathless and wasn’t sure what she should type back, but before she could reply another message flashed on screen.

What did you and Karen argue about today?

----------

William sat there; he had to listen to the boring teenage waffle she came out with every day.

He sighed, trying to sound sincere.
I’m sure she didn’t really mean it. She would be an idiot if she didn’t want your friend. She’ll come around soon, don’t worry.

Elizabeth was almost excruciatingly gullible. Anyone would be mad to want to be her friend, William thought.

Thank you, Romeo. I really appreciate you. I hope we will always be friends!!

Blah, blah, blah, blah was all that William heard. He was letting his touch slip. She was almost too easy to lure into his trap, if he lost his concentration for even a second it could all go wrong.

William leaned back in his chair, lazily brushing his golden brown hair out of his eyes. It was getting a bit long; he would have to get it cut soon. He sighed, looking sideways into a mirror. A 40-year old man looked back at him through hazelnut eyes, the good looks of his youth slowly fading. His once muscular body was now slightly on the podgy side and William hated going to the gym.

William had no idea about what Elizabeth looked like, she might be blonde and pretty, or red headed and spotty. She might even be lying about her age as he was. Only time would tell.

I still don’t know what you look like sweetheart. Could you please send me a picture of your pretty face?

Sure, just give me a second to find a nice picture.

It’s impossible for you to take a bad picture.

William couldn’t believe she was swallowing this rubbish. He had no idea about what she looked like and yet she believed him when he said she could never look ugly. A window flashed up on screen: “Elizabeth is sending you a picture. Would you like to accept?” it read. William knew that a lot depended on this picture. If she was ugly, it would be good bye forever. He would have to start again, find a new girl, hopefully a bit more of a challenge. The mouse hovered over the ‘yes’ button for a second before he clicked on it.

A minute later, it seemed like ten to William, a picture appeared on screen of a pretty girl with blue eyes and blonde hair falling around her shoulders in waves. It was obvious that she had taken along time to choose this picture because she was wearing a pale blue dress that matched her eyes perfectly.  She had the kind of beauty that flourishes with age and the look of innocence that made it clear that she had never been touched by a man before. He was probably the first male who had showed an interest in her.

William chuckled to himself, as he tapped out his answer.

----------

Now you know what I look like, can I please see what you look like?

The light had faded from outside and Elizabeth hadn’t satisfied her curiosity for the night. She accepted the invitation for being sent a picture from Romeo. It took two minutes to download.

It’s a picture of me and my father, it’s the only one of me I could find that I liked.

A picture opened on the screen of a man in his early 40s, his youth lost with his age, and a teenage boy standing next to him, grinning at the camera. The boy had thick brown locks that framed his face. Dark brown eyes were looking at the camera but his smile, full of pearly white teeth, hadn’t reached them. Elizabeth had guessed that this picture had been taken against his will as so many of her had been taken by her family.

You are beautiful Elizabeth; I hope that my looks don’t disappoint you too much.

Elizabeth was stunned by Romeo’s modesty. Compared to him, she was just a shadow of beauty.

Your looks do not disappoint me, and I can’t see how they could.

I’m sure the picture doesn’t do you justice. I wish I could see you in real life, but in today’s society, I know that would be impossible.

Impossible!?!?! Elizabeth thought to herself. Surely in today’s society, it would be possible, they didn’t life that far away from each other and people were a lot more accepting than they used to be.

“Beth, time to go to bed now.” Elizabeth sighed, she was fifteen and yet her parents still told her when to go to bed.

Until tomorrow my sweet. Sleep well.

With the last message from Romeo, Elizabeth grudgingly turned her computer off. She would always talk to him tomorrow.

----------

As William turned off his computer, he thought to himself that he had made a lot of progress with Elizabeth today. She had made it clear to him that she did want to meet him and with any luck she would be the one to ask for them to meet.

“Dear, could you make sure Josh is asleep?” Marianne called from the other room. William pocked his round the door and he saw his wife sitting in front of the TV curled into one of the chairs. She smiled at him and beautiful green eyes met his. They were the reason he had fallen in love with her, but after twenty years of seeing the same eyes look at him, morning and night, he just wanted someone else to look at him like she did.

“Of course sweet heart”, William said, smiling to himself. He had always been a good actor. Five years and four girls later, Marianne still didn’t know that her beloved husband didn’t love her.

Josh was their son, the younger of two. Josh was ten and James was fifteen. James was the spitting image of William when he was fifteen, which was one of the reasons why he had chosen to send Elizabeth a picture of him and James together.

A door filled with stickers of Pokémon slowly approached William as he walked down the hallway. The room within was silent but even when William was younger he had pretended to be asleep when his parents had come to check. He opened the door, and the room was still. Apart from the wardrobe. The door had been left open a crack and a flickering light was emitting from it. William opened the door, putting a stern look on his face. Josh sat in the bottom of it playing on his game boy.

“Go to bed Josh” William commanded, knowing how much Josh loved and respected him, he would do whatever he would tell him to do. Josh hurriedly scrambled out of the wardrobe and into bed, switching his game off as he went. When he was settled, William bent down to kiss him good night on the forehead.

“Until tomorrow my sweet. Sleep well”

Familiar trap

A few errors, e.g. relieve instead of relief, but not badly written. Will Beth fall into this, all too familiar, trap?
