GYPSY
By meadowcroft1964

IN THIS POEM I AM TRYING TO EXPRESS MY FEELINGS TOWARDS THE REACTIONS I OFTEN RECEIVE WHEN I REVEAL MY HERTIAGE

When i state i am a gypsy,
and that i am proud of the fact
their bodies recoil and judgment is passed
i am no longer a person with a heart and a soul
i am a thief ,i am dirty,
 my morals are lacks
we take away their children
they know this for fact,
they say we are vermin
yes they treat us like rats

so if you should meet me
there's one thing i ask
discard all the labels
forget all the tags
see the person before
neither all good or all bad
just someone with feeling
someone just the same as you

I think if I had such exotic heritage I would be proud of it too. Not many people can honestly claim that they descended from gypsies.

Perhaps some of their trepidation comes from the difference between BEING a gypsy and COMING from gypsies. I'm not an expert on gypsies but I believe that it is a way of life rather than an ethnicity. Do you mean that you actually are a gypsy, or that you descended from them?

It's a bit paradoxical to claim pride in your being a gypsy, and then ask people to discard the labels. You've pretty much labeled yourself. I think that mixed message many be a bit confusing to some people.

Thanks for taking the time to read and review my work.
the debate about what defines being a gypsy weather its life style ,culture or blood is very complex i personal would say i fit into all these categories when i ask you to disreguard the labels I am talking about people,s misconceived ideas that as a race we are congenital dirty thieves who live and have the morals of vermin, this i am sorry to say as been my experience.

I'm sure most people can relate to your experience at some level. There is racism, sexism, all kinds of biases we must plough through in life, and some we ourselves ignorantly participate in. Since we cannot control other people's responses or the fact of our births, I think all we can do is get to a place where we are "truly" at peace with who we are and grateful to be who we are, and offer the same respect and appreciation for others. When you say you are "proud of the fact", I have a feeling it has an element of reactionary defensive mechanism firing off. I think I can understand a little where you are coming from, and I hope we will all rise above it.
