Overkill

This may be in the wrong section .... but I would hate to admit that it is NON-fiction ....

Overkill

Will a future society have anything remotely resembling Tolerance in its nature?

Certain recent events have left me with the distinct feeling that the word itself may have disappeared from all dictionaries, lexicons and thessauræ before much longer

1)The Litter Police

A motorist is issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for £80 for throwing a coffee cup from her vehicle, the offence being recorded on CCTV from an unmarked police car. While I cannot disagree with the principle that nobody ought to drop litter, I query the size of the penalty (and is there just a touch of "Alice's Restaurant" in this scenario??)

2)The Housing Police

Government-appointed 'clipboard persons' have been sent to count the number of lightbulbs (and other minutiæ of equally vital importance!) in every house which has been offered for sale since May 1 2007. The excuse offered, apparently, is to determine the level of "energy efficiency" in the property. The last time something similar was attempted  (1696-1851) the only noticeable result was that people "bricked up" Windows to avoid paying Window Tax.

3) The Thought Police

Even in my wildest, gung-ho they're-all-out-to-get-me anti-Establishment student days, it would never have crossed my drink-fuelled imagination to think that a Police Constable might be knocking on someone's door and attempting to arrest a TWELVE-YEAR-OLD for daring (!!!) to text a friend and using the word "gay" in the message….

These are examples from Real Life.
Something, as Will Shakespeare said, is rotten – and not just in the state of
Denmark!
To quote a more recent source:
Britain has become "the sick man of Europe".
(PM Ted Heath, c. 1970+/-???)

Again..lot of things to ponder about. But i wonder if you could somehow weave this into a story...would be more interesting

Interesting and disturbing facts - but I agree with TT, they need to be made into a story

Interesting point well made. I hadn't heard the one about the text message. Why don't they just arrest everybody?

All the more reason why we should all firmly and vigorously raise two fingers to the thought police and PC brigade. Problem is, people think they can not say or do certain things and then that becomes established practice.

Don't know about story - there's certainly an OTT rant in there somewhere.

Good points well made.

To be honest, it probably does belong better in the Non-Fiction section. Truth, as they say, is often stranger than fiction.

Apologies if I'm being thick, but I didn't get the 'Alice's Restaurant' reference.
