Muddle Puddle Pie
By Katanga
24 April 2008

This one just popped into my head and off the paper tonight . . . Inspired by Fellpony, Josie and Roald Dahl - an unholy mix if ever there was one (no offence!).

I guess it's aimed at the 'intelligent seven-year-old' - sweet at the the beginning, and challenging at the end. Any thoughts welcome!

Tell you what - it's a great relief for me to get away from the adult poetry section occasionally to write something relatively free from angst, for children. . . (smiley)

Yo! All the best to all of you -John. X

Muddle Puddle Pie

Have you ever eaten
Muddle Puddle Pie?
If not, I really think you should -
Here are some reasons why:

It isn't full of lentils
And yucky things like that
In fact it's full of chocolate
And none of it's low-fat.

It's fantastic - full of beetles
And things that creep and crawl
I tell you they're delicious -
You can chew and munch them all!

They wiggle about in front of you
As you sit down to eat
And they ask you to just crunch them
Like any old mincemeat.

But spare a thought for those below
Who wriggle in their seats
How on Earth are they to know
That you're sitting down . . .

To eat?

:grin I absolutely loved it! It is the exact kind of thing that would have made me giggle as a child. I would make girls go YUCK! boys go COOL! all round a good poem.

I am an adult but I was highly temtped to go yuck! ;)

Children would like the subject John, but they especially like poems which have good metre, and yours has gone a bit astray in this one. It could easily be improved and well worth doing. (Google "iambic metre" or buy Stephen Fry's excellent book).
Muddled Metre

Hello Josie!

Thanks for this - I can read it aloud without awkward rythm, but I'm sure it's technically flawed. I used to fiddle about with trochees and spondees and iambic pentameters in order to write wretched Latin verse! But I've forgotten all of that (well, it was 35 years ago!), so I'll get hold of Stephen Fry A.S.A.P

Cheers! John X
