The written word

This poem is a true account of my experiance of learning to read

The written word

I have always had this love of words

I don't know from whence it came

Thou sadly there was someone

who didn't feel the same

He couldn't read a word

or even write his name

so he was adamant

I should be the same

He said that I was stupid

A silly little fool

To want to read a book

Or even go to school

I didn't let this stop me

I wanted so to learn

So as to prevent me

my books he would burn

I couldn't let him deter me

I knew he wasn't right

So I'd hide away those precious books

To read them through the night

When my secret he detected

The electic bulb he disconnected

Now he thought that I was beat

 that I'd admit defeat

NO! way would I retreat

 So with the bedcovers

up high and tight

I'd read my books by candle light

Now that I am older

and I am nobody fool

I would like to say one thing to you

It's been my greatest tool

Good on you, meadow! You remind me of others (actually all girls), who too had to overcome similar problem. And in the written word they found freedom, escape, creativity, and the dream. I too used to sneak out at night to read books in the bathroom or read them under the blanket with a pencil light, but not because someone tried to stop me from learning. My Mum just wanted me to sleep and get up on time. But your case is very different from mine, I realise. I hope you keep learning and use the written word like the sword, to keep freeing yourself and many others.
