Old Trafford

this little piece is composed around the names of districts in Manchester, a bit of fun.

Old Trafford

was as well as could be expected,

no one really knew

how old he was, some said

eighty or maybe ninety

but no one knew for sure

not even Old Trafford

for it was said that

he lost his mind many years ago

on that awful day on the Somme.

But OT, he was ok

Lady Barn saw to that
all his needs provided for
even trips out in that car of hers,
story goes that in those years gone by
Lady Barn and Old Trafford
were more then just good friends.

The Doctor's family took care of OT,
Stretford Hulme and the two boys
Davy Hulme and Levens Hulme
tended for all his needs and
kept him all right, they told me once
how OT had asked to go shooting
but his Longsight was long gone and
that Whalley Range was not
the place for him, not now days
so they used to take him out
to the Moss Side,
just to watch the flowers grow.

What about Droyl's Den and Open Shaw, then?

One of my all time favourite pieces on this site is 'A Case of Brum' by Amboline so this is bound to get gold stars from me. I like the way you made it into a story, very clever. It's funny how just odd names can be but you get so used to them.

Some of those names took on an almost mythic quality for an old Smiths fan.

I like what you've done here, and the last line...the subtle allusion to the shootings around Moss Side, where I suspect any flowers 'growing' are the bundles left at the latest victim's murder site.

Living pretty close by I can't help but picture some of the places as I read. Good fun.

Nathan glad you got the flowers bit.
