Little Susie Spider - A Mini-Beast Poem for younger children
By Josie
08 May 2008

I have in mind Key Stage 1 children - aged between 4 - 6 years of age.  Simple story with simple rhyming.  My little granddaughter likes this and she's 3.  They are doing "mini-beasts" this term even in nursery school.

Spider

                              Little Susie spider,

Hanging from her thread:
“Come and see what I’ve made”

Susie  proudly said.

“Please admire my silken web,

So beautiful and strong
I’m hoping that a tasty fly,

Soon will come along.
 "

"The fabric of my little web

Is just as strong as steel.
It really is the perfect thing
                                 To catch a tasty meal."

" I’m no different to you humans

When you net a tasty fish,
But I much  prefer small insects
                                   Upon my little dish.
 "

Love it, Josie! I've just read aloud to Joanna, my girlfriend, who commented,

"The children at my school would really enjoy it - it's informative and flows along really nicely!"

BTW, how do you insert the little pic at the top? I've tried and failed!

Sorry, might might be worth correcting the typo in the title?

Cheers!

You are a true childrens poetry genius. I am being 100% honest here. You seriously need recognition! I just love all your poems, they are just wonderful. They'll make adults reminisce and children squeal with delight. True talent. xxx
Praise Indeed!

You are very kind. I am hoping to get a bit of "recognition" Puppywuppy. An educational publisher has just collected them all. Fingers crossed. He's got to do some "costing". It's not cheap to produce books nd schools are reluctant to spend money - but I pointed out to him that "grandparents aren't". We'll see.

My boy (5) is fascinated by insects like spiders. He enjoyed this poem, loved the picture, and insisted I now find him a Spiderman poem on the computer. (Couldn't find any. I hope you write some, Josie!) Lovely. I hope many of your poems get published with lots of bright fun pictures!

If he liked this poem, he would also like the poem called "Tragedy at Mini-Beastie Hall" where the spider has central role in a dark plot. Please do try this one with him. I hope he likes my other insect poems. I could not write a poem about Spiderman because the name and idea would be copyright. But you can write one for him secretly at home. Thanks for your feedback. I like to know if children enjoy the poems as they are my target audience.

Nice! Sweet and simple and educational. Wouldn't it be nice if you would have as many mini-beast poems as there would be kids in one class and each of them could tell something about one of the mini-beasts? I guess that would be more suitable for somewhat older kids, but your poems would be a very nice introduction I think.
