I gave my 25th pint yesterday.
TRANSFUSION
"O Negative" and generous, to a fault
my body does not waste its protein stores
fashioning barbed antigens, to coat
the surface membranes of my red blood cells.
What I can give of, all may freely take,
it cannot hurt you - only help you heal.
I am, in truth, the Universal Donor.
My blood is therefore always in demand.
When I'm in need, it's then I must beware.
If I am matched amiss, the consequence
would be disaster. If I then received
from most of you, your blood would scorch my veins.
Your foreign cells are poison, bearing thorns
to scourge and scarify me from within;
burnish all my vessels, halt my breath.
So vulnerable is the generous Type.
And so for me, it's prudent to take care.
More blessed it is to give than to receive.

It's funny what goes through your mind when do something like that.It never occurred to me to think I might need some when I gave it. Sounds more risky than I knew. Maybe not quite up there with Tony Hancock but a really fascinating read and you obviously know your subject. jane | Written by Brett (474 comments posted) 10th May 2008 | Such an original subject, V, and it seems effortlessly written. And once again you close with such a wonderful phrase. Cheers | One could say Written by patterjack (1055 comments posted) 10th May 2008 | Bloody 'ell !!!! Fascinating stuff patterjack | Written by Josie (2496 comments posted) 10th May 2008 | | Strange subject to write about Veronica, but are you,by any chance, related to Tony Hancock? It wasn't just a poem but a whole programme on The Blood Donor - and very funny it was too. | Written by Veronica_Milvus (455 comments posted) 10th May 2008 | I used to have some dealings with the manufacture of blood typing reagents and I have an undergraduate knowledge of immunology. Just struck me as a bit unfair that I can donate to anyone but not receive from any type, other than other O negatives. But that's life. | Written by Phil (6383 comments posted) 10th May 2008 | I thought this worked well. Like Jane, I'm amazed you got a poem from it - and a good one. Prodded a little guilt too. I've not given blood for about fifteen years - and then only twice. (and I fainted both times - but at least I was lying down at the time) I'll have to look up where I can go again. Phil |
