For me WW2 is just what I read in the history books, but it's still important I think, to remember that people fought and died so that we can live in peace... As for the V2s: I know they were launched from Holland rather than at Holland (Rotterdam was destroyed by planes), but they seem to be a clear symbol of the horrors of that war.

May 10, '40

A small nation was awoken,

As tanks rolled into the polders.

Waterlinie, Grebbelinie;

Useless against the violence.

And then a rain of bombs came down.

Rotterdam perished in the flames.

The blaze could be seen from afar,

And the smell of death filled the air.

May 5, '45

After five years of oppression

After famine and manmade floods

The V2 engines fell silent

The smouldering of ruins stopped

No more people shot at random

No more trains left for German camps

How many never saw this end?

Never forget. Never again...

Again some powerful lines here;

'Useless against the violence.'

I wonder how many people thought exactly that.

'Never forget. Never again...'

Let's hope so, Maus.

Good for you.

Cheers

Thanks Brett.
Usually May is a bit of a remembrance month over here I think: May 4 the fallen are remembered and May 5 is liberation day.

Thanks Phil.
One of the most scary things about WW2 I think is that such a modern and supposedly civilized country like Germany could turn into such a monster. I think that's the most important lesson to learn from it: That we should take care it will never happen again and that it's not just something that could happen far away or a long time ago...

Never again. That's something my mother says with great feeling, who survived the Korean war, and saw terrible terrible things. And I agree about Germany. With all that refined culture, music, religion, science etc etc, they commited the atrocity. An old oz man who fought in WWII said, he saw men turn into animals under extreme pressure, refined men, sophisticated men, educated men, religious men... He had little faith in man's "inherent" goodness.

Thanks Mia.
I guess humans have capabilities in them for great goodness in them as well as great evil. I think it's important for the people in rich an peaceful countries to remember that this goes for them too. If something like that could happen in a powerful country with such a long tradition of enlightenment and philosophy, then where could it not happen?
