On Thursday I awoke to the news that Tommy Burns, a legendary Celtic footballer, manager and coach had died of cancer, aged 51. Like the whole of Scotland I was devastated. The night before was a big night in Glasgow (and Manchester) as the Uefa Cup Final took place. Glasgow was either delighted or gutted at the result. But the news that followed just a few hours later put everything into perspective. Football is just football. Celtic and Rangers fans alike were distraught at the news, simply because Tommy was a great human being.
Tommy wasn't just a great footballer, a great manager and a great coach. He was a great person. He devoted his whole life to helping people, whether it be in his job, his family, his faith, his charities. Nobody, nobody has a bad word to say about him.
I wrote this for him. He's someone everyone should look up to in how to lead their life. A great person. He'll be dearly missed. Heaven has gained a hero. God bless you Tommy, may you rest in peace.
Tommy twists, Tommy turns
I’ll never forget Tommy Burns.
On display, his passion for life,
His football, his faith, his family, his wife.
We’ve lost a good man so premature
Our sadness and grief will forever endure.
But our memories of you will never cease
Tommy Burns, may you rest in peace

| Ahhh! I'm sure that Tommy must surely be looking down on you and smiling. What a nice poetical tribute. I'll book you in advance shall I, for myself. |

Ha, yes I could start something up there couldn't I? I'm sure everyone would be delighted knowing their poetic obituaries were at the mercy of myself lol. Thanks Josie. He really was a great guy. It would probably take the greatest poet ever to do any justice in poetry to just how special a man he was. Thanks again |

This touched me mr soul, as a fellow glaswegian I understand your motivation. Its a shame that it takes something like this to bring the two sides together but youre right - it does put it all into perspective. L x ps mon the hoops ha ha! |

I'm glad it touched you shirley. Yes, in tragedy most people put aside their differences but before long they're back again. There's nothing wrong in rivalry, it's great fun, but as you well know people can take it too far. It was encouraging however to see everyone mourn his death irrespective of the team they follow. And yes mon the hoops! ha ha! Lets hope for a victory on Thursday and a special championship win. I hope they do it for Tommy, that would be nice. Thanks again. |

| Somehow the simple rhyme scheme seems to fit well. It gives the poem pace. A nice tribute indeed. |
