English Slacker chapter six

I got out of work half an hour early cause there were no managers around to stop me and before I knew it I was standing outside Duncan’s flat, banging on his window, hoping that he hadn’t already left.

I was out there for ages, standing around wondering whether to go to the extreme of shouting through the letterbox until finally Duncan came out, looking pretty sober actually – He was like, “Up for a good night?” All enthusiastic and that, which I knew meant he was obviously in one of his turn-over-a-new-leaf moods, which was always shit to like, I dunno, put up with. So yeah, I tried not to encourage him too much on the way there, like give him too much of a chance to talk so I told him the story about my day, about how stoned I’d been and how I’d even fallen asleep at work and that; although he didn’t find it as funny as he usually would’ve.

We got down The Bowman at about nine. Neale was already there with Graz, sitting at one of the round tables by the fruit machines. Me and Duncan said, “Hi,” and then went to get some in.

At the bar Ambra spotted us straight away and served us with some beers and four free chasers (that were these little blue drinks which tasted like shit but were well strong). She was looking pretty hot as usual, this time wearing a light green flowery dress over her jeans and had her hair in pig-tails which, I don’t know why but that really used to do it for me with her; the pig-tails I mean. But anyway, yeah I didn’t have the chance to talk to Ambra much ‘cause she was busy but she did ask me what I was planning to do once the summer was over as she took the money – I said that I wasn’t sure and she told me that she was gonna go travelling, which sounded quite cool: Although when I asked her, “Where?” she just said, “All over.”

When we got back to the table Neale and Graz were talking to a couple of birds who I think were in Graz’s year but they left when we arrived; but not ‘cause of us or anything.

The place was well busy already, full of the usual Friday night crowd, all pissed and shouting and having a good time. And I remember I felt well happy to be in there at that moment, totally grateful for Graz and Neale and Duncan’s… just being there I guess.

Anyway, as I sat down Graz asked me if I’d heard the new Pearls single (which was shit) and we argued about that for a while – Fucking Pearls: Bunch of scene-stars trying to sound like The Crushed and Hessian. Graz thought they were well good though. He was describing it as the, “Perfect song for the summer.”

Neale was looking kinda smug, not surprising considering his latest pull (according to what Bradby had said the day before things were still going pretty well too), and after arguing with Graz I asked Neale if she was joining us later, him saying, “Maybe,” and looking like he didn’t wanna go into any more detail so of course we all started pushing him to tell us all about her.

So it was a good start, that night. Usually it took a few for us to get going, but what with the day I’d had and with Neale’s new found status we had plenty to talk about.

Ambra came over to our table after a while, flirting with Graz, then talked to Duncan for a bit about travelling, which really started him off on his whole new-leaf thing – He was all, I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna save so much money from not smoking pot that I’ll have enough to go to Australia,” and was all calculating money and stuff.

A few pints later when everything around us was starting to get that little bit more blurred and everything and everyone seemed to be moving that little bit faster we decided to head off down The Temple.

You are obviously developing characters here, Chris. I'll move on to Chapter 7.
