Late Frost
By maipenrai
18 May 2008
The Idea behind this came from reading a book recently on the Vietnam War.

Do you remember my love
the late, late frost of
sixty eight,
that time of loving and
flowers in the rain,
do you remember
sixty eight my love.

The year I sailed away
with no flowers in my hair,
the year I sailed away
to that foreign land
where all our lives
were changed.

Do you remember my love
the late, late frost of
sixty nine,
that time of love and roses
the time of my return,
I cannot blame you my love,
no, I cannot blame you,
you had your life to live.

Do you remember my love
the late, late frost of
sixty eight
before I sailed away.

O, dear. A lot of Korean men went to Vietnam war in those days, and I've heard of similar stories. Men who come back to find their girlfriends married to other men, to find their wives had packed up and left, they couldn't wait for their men. And of course, there were men who returned home with other women, and sometimes children, and broke their girlfriends and wives' hearts.

Heartbreaking stuff, this war. I feel it strongly in this poem. The repetition of 68, flowers (roses), rain, late late frost, sailed away etc and the breaking pattern by 69 were very effective. Gave such sense of history, a poignant living memory that was one man's life, and the story of so many men.

Very effective, lovely.

The best thus far

I wish I were a better writer and knew enough about poetry to properly critique it.

I am brand new here and you have earned my first critique. I really enjoyed this, and it's my favorite that I"ve seen here thus far.

Nice work... one of the softer tragedies of war.
