English Slacker chapter eight

This is the final chapter from section I

It was a different atmosphere out the front: Loads of people, most of them older than me. And it was noisy too. Everyone was shouting. There was a karaoke thing going on and it was all like mad and that.

I looked around for Duncan and Neale but they didn’t seem to be anywhere. So I queued up for the drinks by myself, feeling a bit awkward actually, like a bit more wary of pushing my way to the bar as I usually would’ve done. And once I’d finally got there it was well difficult to get served ‘cause there were so many other people fighting for drinks.

Finally one of the bar staff noticed me though, I think ‘cause I’d obviously been there for so long, and I shouted to her what I wanted. It was double for fifty p extra for the house whisky so I got me and Graz and Colin a couple each. I told the barmaid that I wanted them in three glasses and it took her ages to understand what I meant.

While I was waiting for them the girl in the orange dress, who I’d been staring at before, appeared next to me out of nowhere – actually I dunno how long she’d been there to be honest. But anyway she was sort of pushing her arse into mine and I felt like I should say something so I leaned into her and tried to make eye contact, and I think I just said, “All right?” but whatever it was she gave me a questioning look and then kinda scowled at me sarcastically when I failed to say anything back. So I gave it one more try with a,What?” combined with a cheeky smile but she wasn’t having any of it. (She did have well nice tits though; and I got a good look.)

Colin was still playing pool when I got back and I wasn’t really sure where to put his drink so I put it on the pool table and after his shot when he noticed it he said, “Cheers,” and downed it.

Graz was in the corner of the room, carefully rolling a one skin (tongue hanging out, looking like, I dunno, a kid with a new toy or whatever) not really appreciating the sudden attention when I shouted to ask him if he wanted to put some better tunes on. He quickly said for me to, “Wait a minute,” but I couldn’t be arsed so I went over there by myself.

At the jukebox I looked for the Celebrations album and chose a couple of songs off that, and then put on It’s up To You When You Want ‘cause I knew Graz would appreciate it. After that I put on Component 2 by Planquez which is always a good tune to hear, and finally I fancied choosing something a bit more alternative so I picked the secret track from the new Kews album which I reckoned would weird a few people out.

The joint was only a one-skin and it wasn’t that strong but after a few drags me and Graz really started to notice the music and were singing away. I told him about the girl at the bar and how she’d been rude to me, although instead of finding it funny he said that I should, “Just go for it.”

I looked over at Colin again who was now really taking the piss out of the guy he was playing. Like really badly. And he was all doing all these trick shots and closing his eyes and stuff.

I remember it was kinda funny to see him prancing around the table, getting so into it, looking so happy. But something about it also seemed a bit wrong. Like for some reason I really wanted him to just stop and come and sit with us.

When I shouted over to ask him if he wanted another drink though, he either didn’t hear or was just ignoring me.

So I asked Graz if he was up for another whisky and turned my thoughts back to orange-dress-girl.

Really good descriptions of a teen scene. Your great strength is describing teenagers as they are, their worries and concerns and their lines of conversation.

But you are still character-developing....
