English Slacker chapter nine

This is the first chapter from section II

So this time it was a Sunday and it was about a week and a half later, maybe two weeks. And apart from seeing Colin’s actions on the pool table nothing that weird had really happened to me yet and all in all you could say that I was feeling pretty normal still.

It was around eleven o’clock and I was on my way to Duncan’s. I was late ‘cause of The Terminator wanting me to close up produce and I’d had to finish at ten. Everyone was already there when I arrived, all watching The Sarsaparilla; the flat looking like a tip again.

Duncan sat back in his usual place on the floor by the TV and started rolling a cigarette. Bradby said “Alright?” and I said “All right,” back. No one else said anything. All just watching the film and obviously stoned.

I looked around for somewhere to sit, feeling a bit pissed off ‘cause I’d been hoping for a proper chance to have a good night and was in the mood to talk – it was already looking obvious I wasn’t gonna get any good conversation for a while though. So I asked if anyone wanted tea and immediately everyone was like, “Yeah!” (That is except Neale’s girlfriend who didn’t want anything, and Ambra who wanted water, and Sereme wanted a coffee predictably but whatever.)

Once in the kitchen I looked around for mugs and found two in the cupboard, one on the table, which was dirty and needed washing, and a few in the sink full of murky water and old tea bags. So I went back into the front room to see if there was anything cleaner, and like maybe a glass or something for Ambra’s water and found one on the floor next to Duncan.

I looked at the film for a bit. It was at the part where the Casio-tone song’s playing and The Triple’s are all dancing in the café, which is a cool scene to watch, however many times you’ve seen it. The part when you first realise that the guy with one eye is interested in Karen but you’re still not sure if it’s him who’s been sending her the letters and it’s all intense and stuff.

Everyone was well into it and didn’t seem to notice me standing there. Graz was laying on the floor the other side of the TV with Sereme. Bradby, Neale and his girlfriend were on the sofa. Ambra had the armchair and Charlotte was on the wicker-chair by the window.

I remember standing there looking around, thinking about where would be the best place to sit later, which seemed like a choice between the floor, or maybe squeezing onto the sofa next to Neale’s girlfriend or Bradby.

The music from the film stopped and it went back to a boring part so I looked around for any more cups (so I didn’t have to wash the ones in the sink), and then searched to see if there was any sign of some gear lying around but couldn’t see either.

So I went back into the kitchen, put on the radio and rolled a fag before starting the washing up.

You write

"...nothing that weird had really happened to me yet and all in all you could say that I was feeling pretty normal still."

Should he be feeling not normal? Is there something I had missed. I got an inference in the last chapter that he was a bit fed-up with the drugs thing when he saw his friend dancing on the table. He tries to make tea - is this indicative of his feelings about drugs?

Then you write:

"...and then searched to see if there was any sign of some gear lying around but couldn’t see either."

He clearly isn't ready to give up drugs yet, is he?

Like the descriptions of him looking for cups.

Descriptions of what is happening in a film doesn't do it for me. There are an awful lot of films in the world and generally people haven't seen the film you're talking about.

Hope all this helps.

There is something that you missed but don't worry you are supposed to have missed it.

The film is fictional - that is, it doesn't exist in real life, only in this book.
