Our dogs are pets, not working dogs. However they are a working dog breed: Cattle dogs. Regardless of being brought up as pets the instinct to work is always there.
We have these dogs at our farm,
In numbers there are three;
Penny the pound dog, Taffy the toff,
And Pete, who follows me.
We check the cattle ev'ry day
"Cause working dogs they'll be;
I'm the one who does the work,
They are overseers,you see.
I open the gates, fix the fence,
Wash out the water troughs,
I look at every single cow,
Examine each one that coughs.
They sit in front, so nice and neat,
No movement do they make
Until they see a kangaroo,
All three then make a break.
When at home I choose to stay,
They care for ducks and chooks.
Our friends think its kind of strange
And give us funny looks.
Dogs do like a walk each day
We must go walking,too
No matter what we've got on
What chores are still to do.
So when they do at last lay down,
Relax with a real big sigh,
Tip toe round for just a while,
Please, let sleeping dogs lie.

Sleeping dogs Written by awakenedmind (48 comments posted) 23rd May 2008 | Really loved this work, as I read through it painted I picture for me to follow. I can't say that I'm qualified to comment grammatically etc but I do know what I like when I see it! Well Done I'm envious awakenedmind aka Michael | Written by Robru (219 comments posted) 23rd May 2008 | | Hello Michael, I love those dogs, there are almost completely useless as working dogs but they make life so interesting. Thank you for your generous comment. We have moved from that farm to another but I no longer have to work on the farm. Its lovely, so are the dogs. | Written by Brett (785 comments posted) 23rd May 2008 | Being a dog lover, Bob, I enjoyed this very much. It flows very well. My dogs (Parson Jack Russell terriers) have been used to farm stock since they were puppies (our workshop being on a working farm) so sheep and cattle are there playmates - but, like your Kangaroos, if a rabbit, squirrel, or rat show their head we don't see them for dust! I like this very much, particularly that last stanza because I live it every day. Cheers | Written by mia_ms_kim (1019 comments posted) 23rd May 2008 | What a lovely life you describe, Bob. Those dogs almost seem like children. They sound so cute. I really liked the "overseers" bit. I guess they've got to do something to earn their keep if they are supposed to be "working" dogs. Are they really afraid of roos? And look after chickens and ducks? These days we hear so much about dogs mauling children etc on the news, I get phobia about my child going near a dog. (Actually a little dog bit him on the knee on his way back from school with no provocation whatsoever. I was so angry at the dog and the owner.) Perhaps city dogs are getting stressed just as we are. We don't hear about rural dogs behaving badly. As I said before, Bob, you seem to have a lovely life. I'm jealous. Mia | Written by Robru (219 comments posted) 24th May 2008 | To both Brett and Mia, I say thank you, I appreciate your encouragement and support. To Mia in particular, my dogs are not afraid of roos, they chase them. Mind you, if they caught one they would just introduce themselves and have a chat about the weather or something. They are not killers. Sheepand cattle are friends and everything else is chaseable. Like I said, they are not killers. The cattle dog, penny, will mind new born chickens if you tell her they are puppies. We do have a lovely life, Mia, but it also has its other side. I don't write about that. Best wishes to you both. Bob | Love those mutts Written by bwoz (125 comments posted) 24th May 2008 | Very well written poem. It reminds me of a children's book kind of thing -- meant with the best intent. This is a very friendly, humorous, real view of how our pets have us trained. I believe that dogs really are man's -- and women's best friends. I don't know what my life would be like without my dogs -- I call them meathead, in the most loving sense of the word. Nice poem, do you have pictures to go with it? BW | Written by Robru (219 comments posted) 25th May 2008 | Hello bwoz, I Have a multitude of photos of all three at various ages from wee puppies ti sixyear old mutts. My current lack of computer skill means that I can't share them yet. Thank you for your complimentary comments. I will learn a bit more about this computer as time goes by, I must. Cheers, Bob |
