English Slacker chapter ten

Sereme had her arm round Graz when I came back with the drinks and I didn’t feel like sitting on the floor next to them so I went over to the sofa and asked everyone to budge up. Rather than having my leg touching Bradby’s for the rest of the night I figured it’d be better to go straight for the other side next to Neale’s girlfriend. If I was gonna be squashed next to someone I remember thinking that I’d rather it be a girl – although as I sat down I did sense a bit of amusement from the others. And as Neale’s girlfriend moved closer to Neale I wasn’t sure if it was that she was moving closer to him or away from me; but I didn’t care.

I sat back with my tea, not really interested in the film and looked around wondering when someone was gonna roll another joint: Everything was completely silent though, everyone just gawking at the TV and that.

The film was now at the part where Karen is driving up to the house at the top of the mountain and all the camera angles are all over the place and the section is in black and white to make it all look like it’s in a dream or something. It is sort of a cool part actually but all I could really think about as I sat there was, “When’s somebody gonna roll another joint for fuck’s sake so I can actually appreciate this at least?”

I stared at the cat picture for a bit and then the lava lamp by the wicker chair caught my attention for a while as normal. But all in all I must admit I was kinda bored.

And so finally when I’d given up waiting I said, “Does anyone want me to skin up?” and like immediately some weed and king-skins flew over from Duncan, who said, “Ok, roll up you fucking cane-head,” before looking back at the film – I realised then how it must’ve been obvious what I was thinking and felt a bit guilty actually; but not that much.

I ripped out three skins, which were stuck together a bit but it was all right. And there was plenty of gear so I decided that I was gonna pack this one to give myself the chance to catch up. Everyone did seem to be pretty far gone. And the smell of weed in the room was well strong.

I started rolling it all up while I looked around at everybody again and then caught Charlotte staring at me and I remember I wasn’t sure if it was that she wanted to talk or if she was hoping that I’d pass it her way first: But when I met her eye she looked away quickly.

The joint was quite difficult to roll ‘cause of the papers not having much stick on them and I had to lick it loads of times once I’d finished. After I’d given it enough time to dry though and been bored for long enough I took my first drag and it felt pretty good. A couple more drags held down and suddenly I was in the room.

So, before long I started to notice how awkward Charlotte was looking. She was just sitting there dressed up in her like, clubbers’ uniform, playing with the remains of her tea and looking like, I dunno, like she just didn’t belong if you know what I mean… And yeah, the more I watched her the more it really started to disturb me.

When I passed her the joint she smiled and said, “No thanks,” and looked a bit pissed off. And then for a minute she sort of looked at me as though she was about to say something but didn’t.

At that point Graz suddenly came up for air, pushing Sereme off him and said, “I’ll have some of that,” and grabbed the joint off me, and as he took it I asked him if he was still up for going to the next Basement night and he said, “For sure!”

A couple of murmurs followed but that was all; I guess everyone was still too engrossed with the film to say much. And after the joint (which never came back round again) had finished and the film still hadn’t I was feeling stoned enough but still bored so I said that I was, “Gonna go for a walk down the offie,” and asked if anyone wanted anything.

No one responded apart from Charlotte who said she’d join me. I hadn’t really bargained on any company, especially from Charlotte who I didn’t know that well but I thought, “Fuck it,” and said, “Cool.”

I don’t think anyone really seemed to notice us leaving.

I've read through these chapters in one go Chris and I have to hand it to you, you write slickly and convincingly of this age and lifestyle. I could almost smell the rooms and see the dim, grubby furniture in them. Your character (I can't really dignify him with the title "hero" - yet) is convincingly selective in what he notices and tells us. He doesn't tell us much about his mates' appearance and is well fixated on that of girls. It all rings true of a 17 year old male. I could do with just a little more differentiation between the other male characters to help explain the tensions that Chambers only just perceives. (Which you bring in cleverly, not overdoing them.)

Is the next chapter going to start drawing out the thread that started early on about "Colin" who was mentioned but hasn't appeared?

You have set up the background at some length. Because you write well, I'm trusting your ability to tell me a bit more plot now!

More films!!!!! You come close to saying that films are boring unless you're stoned. As someone who has never taken drugs, I suppose that's probably true!

The laid-back style in which you've written this is very enticing, but again, I'm looking for a... plot.
