For Children
The Seahorse
By Katanga
27 May 2008
No apologies - I just love Seahorses and everything about them!

Should appeal to children too?

Comments welcome please! (my meter's a bit rough - but then so is the sea?)

Cheers!

John

The Seahorse

Some have swum with Dolphins
And shared their friendly foam
But none have ridden a Seahorse
In her underwater home

For the Seahorse is a tiny fish
Often less than one inch tall
Of a million creatures on this Earth
She’s the only one of all

Who gives her eggs to her stallion
Lets him do all the work
Of nurturing their offspring –
A job most men would shirk!

Now, here’s one you can ponder -
If you could make a wish
Would you rather be a Seahorse
Or another kind of fish?

For me the choice is obvious
Needs no thought whatsoever
For a Seahorse is a mate for life
Would she leave you? Never!

A friendly little poem about a fascinating creature. I did think the theme occasionally strayed away from children and into adult concerns but then again maybe that's a good thing

Ahhh! Really lovely. I love the little seahorses too. What a lovely subject and how interesting y ou have made this. It is so good also to see that in one area the man pulls his weight and is faithful. Yes, if we can choose to come back to earth as another creature in the next life, a seahorse would be the obvious creature to be. Thanks John. Wonderful!
Adult Concerns!

Jane - thank you so so much for reviewing this, especially since the last 'furore' - sympathetically, Ha!

Yes, I guess I'm trying to push the boat out a bit. Children are not stupid in their appreciation of what adults concern themselves with, so I thought a few 'hints' would do no harm, even draw them in?

Josie - What can I say? You are my sole inspiration for shildren's poetry . . . and I shall persevere, for better or / and for worse!

Thank you!

Cheers!

I was fascinated to find out it is the male seahorses that gets pregnant! They are such amazing creatures. Do you know how to insert pictures? (I find that my boy needs some to concentrate on the poem or the story.)
