A spoof on the traditional Scottish folk ballad 'Mary Hamilton', this is for any petrolheads out there who saw (or even missed) the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday!

Cheers!

The Ballad of Lewis Hamilton

One Gallant Champion

Word is to the paddock gone
And word’s on the pit wall
That Lewis Hamilton’s won his race
And he’s the best of all

Now hold your tongues, team radios
And let your tyre-trolleys be
For Lewis Hamilton’s work is done
It’s plain for all to see

Arise, arise Lewis Hamilton
Step up on the podium high
Hold your shield above your head
And wipe that tear from your eye

Last night there were two Lewises
Tonight there’ll be the same
There’s Lewis Carroll and you my friend
Who belong in the hall of fame

What about: Leona Lewis, John Lewis, Carl Lewis, Daniel Day Lewis, Jerry Lewis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Juliette Lewis, Meriwether Lewis, Shari Lewis. There was also a boy at school called Lewis who could burp the alphabet and many a profanity. :grin

Actually missed the end of the race as I was watching my Doncaster Rovers win at Wembley for the first time ever. Almost had tickets too. Still, supported the local economy by drinking lots of Tetleys in my local.

Captures some of the essence of the original and some of the triumphalism that surrounds pro sport these days.

and John Lewis - purveyors of furnishings to the Middle Classes?

Shari Lewis was the Best, though. That Lamb Chop, he was a Dude.

Nice one, though, Tolstoy. You are even more of a petrolhead than me. I stop at Top Gear. F1 is too noisy for my head.

Two Lewises, and three Marys! I can see the reference in your last stanza.
Ha! Ha!
