Not a dig at anyone - just trying to find a perspective in / on the incredible experience of joining GW.

Cheers!

A Funny Place

GW is a funny place
It’s neither there nor here
Some will spend a lifetime
Just hoping to get near

To those whose wit seems endless
Whose whimsy knows no end
Reluctant to post a stunning work –
Not daring to press ‘send’

But we’re the fools – it isn’t them
Who tremble with the Muse
It’s we you see, who shake and cringe
Which would you rather use –

The Stephen Fry or Life itself?
When all boils down to dust
It’s up to you to shake the world
Of cosmic poetic trust

When I find myself at my wits' end
And Love at her her most elusive
The Fry and me, we come to be
Not mutually exclusive

So sing with me of Love undone
And never mind the rest
Let’s get the whole thing over
We may not pass the test

But at least we’ve tried with passion
At least we’ve played with words
And if we’re not successful? Well . . .
We’re good romantic turds!

I always like you're poems because they're easy to read. I'm too stupid to bothering wrapping my brain around most poetry I read, but yours don't confuse me :p

Great, as always.

Hello John.

I agree with Mike Bacon, in that your work is very accessible.
I tend to shy away from “intellectual” poetry, while all that pseudo-intellectual claptrap makes my blood boil.
Now, I don’t know about being romantic but I’m definitely a turd and it strikes me that we have a lot of turds on GW. A few big logs, some runny ones… the regular as clockworks. As well as a couple who are too posh to push and the odd constipated one who needs winkling out with a long pointed stick.
A queer bunch of wranglers an’ that’s a fact!

Regards,
Eric.

I am glad that you came onto GW. I have had some of my children's poems here for a long time and never posted them because I felt that some on the main adult poetry section were looking down their scholastic noses at what they would call "trite verse" - but when you plunged in with your mini-beast poems etc and the fun you have in yourself, I have posted them and found that they are liked by many people - the adults as well as the children. Still I think some people are too snooty to comment on work done for children, but you have encouraged me to think "What does it matter what they think?" - they are not my target audience. You are right and many people should learn not to be afraid to post here. There is a place for all good writers. How dull if everyone was the same.

oh Tolstoy, you and your toilet humour! The very last word ruined it for me!

I absolutely agree with Mike your poems are mostly easy to read and understand but more importantly they make me laugh. You are a teacher aren't you. I think your students are lucky as I imagine there's never a dull moment in your lessons

Not sure what Stephen Fry's got to do with it. Is he supposed to be some exemplar of great poetry? I like Mr Fry (or at least I used to, in the days of 'Fry and Laurie', Blackadder..I don't watch him as often now), but I found his 'Ode less travelled' to be lacking in his usual wit, a bit dull and uninspiring. Also, as he chose not to reveal his poetry, who's to say it's stunning or even witty? Maybe I've misunderstood?
