English Slacker chapter fourteen

This is the final chapter from section II

Charlotte didn’t come with me back to the flat. She said she couldn’t be bothered and lived near the park anyway so I left alone.

It was a bit scary actually, walking by myself and all, and I wished I had my walkman; I remember feeling it would’ve been a lot better to be listening to some tunes.

I didn’t swig the vodka ‘cause I was feeling quite pissed and having trouble walking in a straight line. And then I started getting a bit of a headache again after I’d taken a piss in the alleyway. But I finished the hooch and had another menthol that I’d blagged from Charlotte before she left.

When I got to the flat Bradby, Neale and his girlfriend had gone, and Sereme had fucked off too which I was a bit surprised about. The three of them (Graz, Duncan and Ambra,) were having a chill-out session and the No Reconciliations album was playing. All of them teased me about Charlotte as soon as I walked in, with an, “Ahhhh, Chambers you sly dog,” sort of thing, which was weird ‘cause they didn’t even know what’d gone on and I remember thinking that just ‘cause we went for a walk it didn’t mean anything, which is what I said.

It was good to be back though, and warm and this time Duncan offered to make me a tea.

We played the spoons game for a bit which was well funny and Duncan did his usual thing with the drum-sticks. Then I remembered about the malteasers in my pocket and it was like, “Fucking result!”

Towards the end of the night we started talking about our college ball and what we’d thought of it ‘cause Ambra had started us off by saying that the guy she was now seeing was the guy she’d met at the college ball who didn’t actually go to our college at all and was twenty-three and had been someone’s mate or brother, or both. None of us could actually remember seeing her there though and we were teasing her, saying how, was she sure that she’d actually gone the right party? And that maybe she’d been the one who’d been in the wrong place.

So we all talked about that night for a while. How we’d ended up getting really drunk at the bar on Bradby’s tequila shots and how there’d been this rumour that Tom Michaels from Hessian was gonna be there and Graz admitted that he’d actually been kinda looking forward to seeing him, which made us all totally crack up.

Duncan reminded us about how Colin had broken the DJ’s Trendy Holmes record to stop him from playing it and I said about how I’d thought I was gonna pull the blue-haired girl from Skipton until she’d finally ditched me for some townie twat and Graz said, “That was the guy who always used to piss his pants in primary school,” and we all had a laugh about that. And then Duncan (yeah, I think that was his third college ball) was going on about the weed he’d got from Amsterdam especially for the night which had got us completely fucked on the rugby pitch once everyone else had gone home.

And yeah, I started to think about us all there under the stars and like how cool everything had been at that moment, with the night having been such a good one and how we were all still mates after surviving however many years of school and college and all that.

And I guess that was when I realised that I had to see Colin again and talk to him.

Before too long after I said that I had to go and Ambra said, “I’d better be leaving too,” and Duncan offered one more joint for the road and Graz said, “Yeah, why not?” but I really had to get going so I didn’t say anything.

Ambra took fucking ages to get ready. She was all saying bullshit stuff like, “Bye,” and, “Thanks for the night,” and suddenly talking more to Graz and Duncan about nothing of any significance. I stood outside and waited for her ‘cause I didn’t wanna just walk off and was kinda hopping from one foot to the other to stay warm before she finally got her shit together and came out.

When she got outside though she just smiled and said, “See you,” and that was it, which pissed me off a bit, although we were both a bit stoned so I didn’t really care.

I couldn’t really phone Colin ‘cause it was late. Once Ambra had gone I half considered using the phone box to call his house but then thought that if he wasn’t around Duncan’s then he’d probably be up by the cliffs so I headed up there.

I went the beach way, passing town, then cut through the golf course and walked up the path leading to the car park. When I got to the top I headed down towards the coast guard cottages but instead of turning left to the other side of the hill that leads to the beach I went up past the line of gorse bushes and over to the fence by the edge. Once I got to the fence I sat down and waited.

I rolled another fag while I sat there. It was really windy all of a sudden and I hoped that it wouldn’t be too long a wait.

I looked back a few times along the path that I’d taken. I was feeling a bit paranoid to be honest about seeing someone around. But also I wanted to make sure I’d notice when Colin was coming towards me. This was ‘cause I wanted to have time to prepare, or to think about properly what I wanted to say to him.

There were a couple of times when I thought I saw him. Some strange sounds were coming from behind the cottages and later the fence started shaking but both times I reckon it was just the wind ‘cause there was a lot of it and I was on the cliff edge and all.

And there was one time when I really thought it was him ‘cause I thought I heard shouting.

But finally I gave up and walked back down again.

When I got to the town everything was totally quiet, and kinda eerie rather than relaxing. I remember walking to my house as fast as I could.

My bed felt well nice when I got home and I went to sleep pretty quickly. I dreamt about being up on the cliffs and finding Colin on the cliff edge where I’d been sitting and I was trying to wake him up but he just wasn’t moving. And then later I had the same dream except that this time I woke him up and when his eyes opened he looked at me saying, “Why didn’t you come back for me Chambers?” and then sort of got up and pushed me a couple of times before I finally fell over and then he turned to the cliff and ran and jumped off.

I woke up after each dream but I didn’t feel frightened. I just felt well happy that I wasn’t still out in the cold and satisfied with going back to sleep in my warm bed.

Comments as I go along:

"I wished I had my walkman"

I know you wrote this some time ago, but walkmen are so last year! Make it an ipod or MP3 player!

“Ahhhh, Chambers you sly dog,”

I can't imagine a teenager (or young person) saying this. It would be more like, "Chambers, you f***ing w***er. You got off with Charlotte then?"

I don't know where this is set, but I'm writing in Estruarian!

A good chapter. You have A LOT of descriptive detail of small events in this, which of course lend colour and define character, but, having noticed that you are already up to Chapter 27, I do question whether your readers need that amount of detail. As far as most book publishers are concerned, the shorter the better.

On to the next.

The book is set at a time when there are no mobile phones. Mobile phones would have complicated things. Therefore there would be no mp3s and internet either. it is the recent past (was the early to mid nineties the recent past?)

Yes, the chapters are small and there are a lot of them. This is the end of section 2. So in some respects this is the end of chapter 2 of 13 (or for the smaller chapters: 14 of 96).
