Written after my first Greek lesson at school. It's hard enough learning a dead language, but learning a new alphabet too? I'm still finding this one tricky. Alpha... omega... Take me to the start of Everything. Past the myths of pi, The minotaur's lair, The string, the Argo, The scrolls and living cargo, Send one last prayer for me to the Mount. I see nothing. Just mu, nu, and chi if I concentrate Hard enough? It's impossible! The gamma rays fry my brains Not an iota of sense remains. Why did I start this journey to the beginning? An enigma, I'm sure. |
Depending on definition .... Written by Bagheera (683 comments posted) 3rd December 2005 | Liverpool University offer evening classes in conversational LATIN (which many people claim is also a dead language: why should Greek be treated diferently? I count myself a reasonably fluent linguist, specialising in Scandinavian languages. Danes, Swedes and Norwegians willusually agree, however, that the 'other' Scandinavian language is not really a language, more of a "throat disease" (it is totally unrelated to te other three, but may habe some possible connection with (of all things!) the Basque language ..... | Sorry! Written by Bagheera (683 comments posted) 3rd December 2005 | Forgot to include the following in the "Cut & Paste" I used to post the above! I like the way you play with words, twisting the 'usual' meaning of the words to give a secondary meaning i the context of the lines, which I found very clever. | D*** and B**** Written by Bagheera (683 comments posted) 3rd December 2005 | Take 100 lines: " I must proofread before I post" To clear up misunderstanding, the "Fourth language/throat disease" is FINNISH ..... I have met a number of Finns (some of my wife's relatives, for example) and can generally get "up to speed" with the language after a while. However, it takes a concentrated effort and the opinions quoted are (mostly) those of various Danes I have met. I have heard similar comments from Swedes & Norwegians ..... | Written by amboline (183 comments posted) 8th December 2005 | | Very clever. I liked it a lot. | Written by spiderbaby49 (137 comments posted) 3rd January 2006 | Excellent piece. Lovely, clever concept. spidey | Written by rilLie (327 comments posted) 11th August 2006 | excellent piece.. i'm a Latin lover and i'm pretty fluent.. well, anyway, they say they're both dead languages, but for me, if it is still in the hearts of the people who remember them, they'll never be gone, just past. -rilLie 0_o |
