It's all Greek to me!
By kitten_princess
03 December 2005

Written after my first Greek lesson at school. It's hard enough learning a dead language, but learning a new alphabet too? I'm still finding this one tricky.

Alpha... omega...
Take me to the start of
Everything.

Past the myths of pi,
The minotaur's lair,
The string, the Argo,
The scrolls and living cargo,
Send one last prayer for me to the Mount.

I see nothing.
Just mu, nu, and chi if I concentrate
Hard enough?
It's impossible!

The gamma rays fry my brains
Not an iota of sense remains.

Why did I start this journey to the beginning?
An enigma, I'm sure.

Liverpool University offer evening classes in conversational LATIN (which many people claim is also a dead language: why should Greek be treated diferently? :grin

I count myself a reasonably fluent linguist, specialising in Scandinavian languages. Danes, Swedes and Norwegians willusually agree, however, that the 'other' Scandinavian language is not really a language, more of a "throat disease" (it is totally unrelated to te other three, but may habe some possible connection with (of all things!) the Basque language ..... 8)
Sorry!

Forgot to include the following in the "Cut & Paste" I used to post the above!

I like the way you play with words, twisting the 'usual' meaning of the words to give a secondary meaning i the context of the lines, which I found very clever.

Take 100 lines: " I must proofread before I post"

To clear up misunderstanding, the "Fourth language/throat disease" is FINNISH .....

I have met a number of Finns (some of my wife's relatives, for example) and can generally get "up to speed" with the language after a while.

However, it takes a concentrated effort and the opinions quoted are (mostly) those of various Danes I have met.
I have heard similar comments from Swedes & Norwegians ..... :grin

excellent piece.. i'm a Latin lover and i'm pretty fluent.. well, anyway, they say they're both dead languages, but for me, if it is still in the hearts of the people who remember them, they'll never be gone, just past.
