Further relations Scene 4
By BrianRobertNeal

I had tried a plot device used by Thomas Love Peacock in his novels, in his case he built up his cast introducing them in a small clump at the beginning and then adding a new character each chapter until they were all on board.

This has not worked and the play ground to a halt 2 scenes short of the end of act one.

In many ways this posting is like a requiem. Worse still I think I prefer thestyle used in the first play, but if nothing else I have proved to myself that I shall never make a playwright!

SCENE 4-ENTER THREESON
NARRATOR-Things had settled down remarkably well. Arwen was secretly delighted to have Halfling back home with her.
Georgia spent a lot of time in her room like a spider sat on her web, to which she often was connected of course by her computer.
Nigel got promoted and used his influence to get his brother the job vacated when Nigel's number 2 got Nigel's Job. Nigel had said that Gerry was no academic but he could handle staff and could not be intimidated by either customers or the other departments' staff.
Arwen was sat doodling, she was a bit of an artist when the doorbell rang. She was pleasantly surprised to see it was Threeson. She gave him a big hug and as she always did got emotional. They walked into kitchen snuggled up. Threeson gently pulled away.

THREESON-Arwen I've been thrown out by mother's Bloke. There was a fight but I gave as good as I got, I think that I've broken his nose.
My brothers took my side but Mother said that I would have to go. She has ordered Pickfords to come and clear my room and send my stuff on to here. She never wants to see me again and I certainly don't want to see her.
ARWEN-Part of me wants to send you home and part of me wants you to call me mum. So what shall I do?
THREESON-Well Mum, I'll have to ask dad.
NARRATOR-Georgina came down stairs to see who had come in. Threeson grinned at her sheepishly.
GEORGINA-Is he in trouble again Arwen, I know that look.
ARWEN-We've a new lodger, which means I'm down to one spare room, this place is getting to be a Hostel for down and outs and ne'er-do-wells.
THREESON-Well I'll try to raise the tone but if you will have the likes of Gerry and Georgie in here what do you expect.
GEORGINA-You cheeky little sod!
NARRATOR-Georgie playfully slapped Threeson, he pretended to cry and then said to Arwen.
THREESON-Mum, big bad Auntie Georgie just walloped me.
ARWEN-Ah come here diddums for a big slobbery Mummy's kiss.
NARRATOR-To Arwen's surprise, Threeson burst into tears.
THREESON-Mum it's been hell, the things they say about you, dad, gran, granddad and being the youngest they've all picked on me. I'm the one with a degree and a career. My 2 brothers are just drips, both of them now work for luvver boys company and are destined for the Board.
GEORGINA-That's right one will be Transport Director with his own hut in the Car Park and the other will be catering Director and have his very own tea trolley.
NARRATOR-Gerry and Nigel now arrived home at the same time for they both worked in the same office. They as usual came into the Kitchen.
GERRY-Oh god here's trouble, what you doing here Threeson?
ARWEN-He's come home to mum.
NARRATOR-The sextet was complete when Halfling arrived. The news was told and told again.
HALFLING-Threeson you can earn your place here, there's this film I want to see but I'm not going on my own cos of all the creeps, so you are going to have to take me. You can pay the petrol and buy the drinks and I'll buy the tickets.
THREESON-If we went in say half an hour we could take in the new Pasta House, I keep meaning to go but I've no-one to go with.
HALFING -We'll go halves on the meal.
GEORGIE-No mum and I will go halves on the meal, so here's £30 and I'll settle up later with your mum.
NARRATOR-The 2 youngsters went to get ready and then went off to the Shopping Mall. Nigel and Arwen went off to "change" leaving Georgie and Gerry once again on their own.
GEORGIE-Come on you down the Pub and then a Curry!
GERRY-I thought you'd never ask!
NARRATOR-When Nigel came down about 9.30 they found an empty house and a note that said -"Gone off down the Pub"-Georgie.
ARWEN-I worry about them two.
NIGEL-Is there anybody here you don't worry about?
ARWEN-You, funny enough, if anything happened to me you'd look after Halfling wouldn't you.
NIGEL I'd have to, cos she'd own the place and could kick us all out and if I didn't Georgie certainly would look after her.
ARWEN-Georgie's a marvellous Aunt and a wonderful peacemaker. Halfling and me are always falling out and Georgie just smoothes things over. You know, like Gerry does when we fall out. Mind I'm glad they took the company flat off you.
I wish I'd known your parents; I would certainly have liked them. I could have smoothed things over between you and them. You're very quiet Nigel.
NIGEL-I'm happy.
ARWEN-Well then I must be Grumpy, Gerry is Dopey, Halfing is Sleepy, Threeson is Bashful and Georgie will have to be Doc.
NARRATOR-The 2 went into the lounge, snuggled up on the big sofa and fell asleep.

here's my take for what it's worth

narrator -a lot of that shit shouldn't have needed saying
if you'd done your job right in previous acts - yeah?

Threesons opening speech shold have been drip fed

Arwen asking questions - teasing the info out

Here goes - example

THREESON-Arwen you'll never guess wh-
ARWEN- Don't tell me, you've done it again - haven't you

THREESON- I gave as good as I got, caught em a good 'un, I think that I've broken the bastards nose.
ARWEN- What our mum? you've broken her nose?
THREESON- No not our mum, the bastard, HIM
he's only gone and thrown me out
ARWEN- What about Bill and Dave?
THREESON-Good as gold - like you'd expect, my brothers took my side but Mother, she said I have to go.
ARWEN- What now?
THREESON-She's ordered Pickfords to come and clear my room and send my stuff on to here. I can stay? Can't I
ARWEN- like I have a choice
THREESON-(putting feet on settee) She never wants to see me again and I certainly don't want to see her.
ARWEN-You're a problem
THREESON-(helping herself to drink without asking ) I won't be any trouble- promise I won't. Get this
ARWEN-Get what?
THREESON-(lighting a cigarette, dropping match on carpet ) She said - she said She never wants to see me again
ARWEN-You happy with that?
THREESON-(flicking ash on sofa andcarpet ) She said - she said - She never wants to see me again
and I certainly don't want to see her.
ARWEN-Part of me wants to send you home
THREESON-(flicking ash on sofa and carpet ) She doesn't ant me - never wants to see me again
ARWEN- and part of me wants you to call me mum.
THREESON-(putting out cigarette on Arwens prize antiquewooden mantelpiece) She doesn't want me
ARWEN- So what shall I do?

Is that any help?
