For Children
A Wise Elephant
By Katanga
05 June 2008

Hey! I enjoyed getting away from my 'adult' angst . . .

Sometimes I feel that the children's section contains more profundity than the main poetry section - only sometimes, mind you!

Please come and review this side - it's not all 'kiddy stuff'!

I've got more from Josie's 'Autumn Visit' ( 7,147 hits at the last count!), than anything else - much to my possible 'chagrin'!

My record is 167 . . . Ha!

But I truly celebrate this 'For Kids' section, and hope that you will join us?

This humble jolly offering simply says "Pride comes before a fall, so be realistically modest."

Hope some of you will read it to some real children?! (I haven't got any)

Cheers!

A Wise Elephant

We met an Elephant at the zoo

And I asked, “How big are you?

What is your shoe size?

How wide are your eyes?

Oh, please, will you inform us?”

“Now let me see!” the Elephant said -

With her trunk she scratched her head –

“As a matter of fact

I can’t be exact –

You think I am enormous?”

“Of course! I can see that!” I replied

Our Elephant hadn’t lied!

“How long are your years?

How big are your ears?”

I was really getting quite frantic!

“Now let me think!” said our Elephant,

“I don’t want to be irrelevant.

I’m really not sure

Why you should want more –

You reckon they’re gigantic?”

“Well of course I do – everyone does!

I’m not stupid just because

I ask for the metres

Of your various features –

They’re interesting after all!”

“All right! If the truth will meet your needs

I am one of the tiniest seeds

That the Universe

And the Heavens disperse . . .

Look! I’m incredibly small!”

A really great children's poem. It's bright and funny and amply rewards a bit of extra thought.
Here's one of my favourite quotes that I think you will agree with

"You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children".- Madeleine L’ Engle

Great rhymes here. And an entertaining verse.
Have to admire this, because I know a little lad who would love it!

Cheers
Is it you?

Sorry to be cheeky . . .

The little lad that I know who loves it . . . is only little me! The child within rules okay!

If I heard that a 'real' child laughed at this - it would make my day . . .

Well, actually, my year, my Life . . .

Cheers!

What a lovely poem! I think more "wisdom" poems should be written for "big" children! A wise elephant indeed.

Great idea for a poem, and if that counts I laughed away at this (although I'm 30 years old so not sure that counts as a child!) I thought it was a lovely read.

Especially liked "I was really getting quite frantic!"

I'll look forward to some more "kids" poetry from you, you have quite a flair for it.

John, people are beginning to see that a visit to the Children's Section of GW is so entertaining!!! I'm going to write a non-fiction piece about my visit to a primary school in the next town, which I've just returned from, and I am sure, when people read it, they will think that there couldn't be more rewarding writing, than writing for the small folk of our world. The teachers were really enjoying my poems too, and your poem, above, would certainly have been welcomed by the children. (The teacher had to shut the door as the children were laughing at mine). ha ha.
Thanks All!

Gosh, thank you - I'm really touched by all your reviews above . . .

So much so that I had to dash off and write one about lavatories - my favourite celebratory theme. See next post above in this section!

Ho!

Cheers!
