Ypres

I wrote this some time after I visited Ypres, and I'd never made the connection before. But now I read it back it reminds me of the weekend I spent travelling around frence and belgium, looking at monuments, and too many gravestones.

Clouds in line
broken ranks
like a long forgotten regiment
of friends. Clinging

to the glory they once shared,
they stretch into the distance.
Suspense.
Waiting

for the bell toll,
the peal for which they long,
to sever this
aching silence.

Atmospheric. Takes a couple of reads to settle in. Only worry is would it mean as much without the authors note at the start explaining the background to its conception.
