Reflections.

The trouble with reflections
is they always slip away,
like leaves upon the water
drifting into yesterday,
like Monet's water lilies
in a misty mirrored sky,
they flower for an instant
but eventually die.

Reclining in a row boat
on a ghostly painted lake,
the flowers fade and vanish
in my gently swirling wake,
just a silver sad reflection
of a painting that I knew,
like a half forgotten daydream
in my memories of you.

Propped against an oak tree
by a bubbling Summer stream,
I seem to see you smiling
in the water's hazy gleam,
and I try to touch your image
but you shyly move away,
like the leaves upon the water
on your way to yesterday...

It is indeed a great shame that reflections do not last a little longer.and, yes some relationships seem to be the same. A well written poem with good flow and rhythm.

. . . on this! I find it literally breath-takingly beautiful - it has washed me with its calm serenity and banished any trace of anxiety from my very hectic day.

One small quibble:

'They flower for an instant
but eventually die.'

Something's bothering me here - the slow dying process implied by 'eventually' seems at odds with the 'instant' of their flowering, if you see what I mean.

Maybe 'and then too swiftly die'???

Would like to discuss!

Anyway, thank you this Keith, yet another awe-inspiring poem from your good self!

Yes, I can see what you mean John, thanks for pointing that out. I have this bad habit of writing poems, and then posting them without going over them properly, but I will learn some day! Keith.
P.S. Glad you enjoyed the poem, anyway!

Reflections and memories - both imperfect images of something real. A lovely metaphor. Enjoyed the poem.
