English Slacker chapter twenty-three

This is the final chapter from section III

The music was growing on me and I felt pretty relaxed once the train had gone so I rolled another fag to celebrate.

I was just sparking up and going back through my mind who’d come off the train and whether it was worth having another scan for joint butts when I heard the sound of someone running. The sound was getting closer. I looked over at the entrance, half scared half interested about who it was gonna be ‘cause, actually weirdly I half expected it to be Colin.

Before long a figure kinda smashed through the gates and then, I dunno, just sort of like landed on the edge of the platform.

It was Bog-Boy from Price-Savers: “Fucking Bog-Boy!” I remember thinking. “My prayers are answered.”

Bog-Boy stood there looking up and down the platform, all confused and that. Then he walked towards me, quickly and all like with intent.

He didn’t recognise me at first. He was like, “Excuse me mate do you know what time the last train comes?”

And I looked at him for a moment before answering, ‘cause it was a bit confusing at first how he hadn’t cottoned on as to who I was. But finally I turned down my walkman and simply said, “You’ve just missed it mate.”

He realised who I was then; maybe it was my voice. He was like, “You work in Price-Savers don’t you?” which I didn’t bother answering ‘cause he already knew the answer so there was no point. But then remembering that I had to play it cool I started off with a bit of sympathy and said, “That sucks man. So how are you gonna get home now?”

He was still looking confused though and asked me if I was sure the train had gone, like he didn’t believe me or something.

I said, “Honestly it’s gone,” and, “I know, it’s shit man, the last train’s well early!” And ‘cause he was still looking at me funny I then said, “Because it’s Wednesday,” and his face suddenly changed as he like, I dunno… Grasped the situation?

I asked, “So what are you gonna do now?” And he said he didn’t know, then looked at my cigarette and at me and asked me what I was doing and I suddenly took in why he hadn’t believed me before.

I thought for a moment about what to say but then realising that it was the perfect opportunity for my opening I told him that I was looking for joint butts, which I knew being “Bog-Boy” he’d appreciate. And I then said, “You haven’t got any gear have you?”

But he just looked at me with this sort of disgust on his face and said “Nah mate,” and walked off.

Another incident along the way. You introduced "Bog-Boy" but, if he has appeared in another chapter, I can't remember him. That's the problem with putting work up chapter-by-chapter like this. And now I don't understand the significance of "Bog-Boy" or mc's reactions. As my students would say, "I'm confused."

Great atmospherics by the way. I could feel the cold, damp station in the dark.
