The Gift of Music
By LynB
19 June 2008

In times of trouble, music has always been a source of comfort to me, and as some of you know, I have had my fair share of trouble in the last few months, after being diagnosed with breast cancer.  I'm OK now, and things are looking good.  I was inspired to write this poem after listening to one of my favourite opera singers.  Tell me what you think!  Have I been away too long?

When I’m in pain, music calms and heals me,
When I’m in the dark, it brings me light
When I am afraid, it gives me inner strength
To get through another long, lonely night.

You crept into my heart, when I wasn’t looking
You touched my life more than you know
I was lost and scared, and felt small and cold
Hearing your voice set my whole heart aglow.

Each note I hear soars like a bird on the wing
Heaven sent, it makes my heart soar alongside
Those twinkling eyes, that heart stopping smile
Awaken feelings I thought had died.

Life is good again now, clouds don’t hide the sun
I find wonder in most everything I see
Your God given gift of music helped me through
You’ll never know how much you’ve done for me.

Lyn - you have indeed gone through a dreadful time, and I hope sincerely that you are well on the mend now. I think this is a lovely poem in every way , and I have to agree wholeheartedly with you that music is, in itself, a great healer and comforter. It lifts the soul and calms the spirit. Well written.
Fine tribute

A piece that makes me wonder if it was Pavarotti's voice - probably Bocelli's eyes don't twinkle! Domingo was one of my own favourites ...

I think the poem gets into its stride in stanza 2 - and perhaps the first four lines can be dispensed with after all.

Good luck!

Music can be a great healer. After work I have to relax with a couple of hours of music (and a drink of course).
Enjoyed the poem very much, and would be interested to know who the singer was.
Cheers

Hi Lyn. Lovely to see you post again.

Enjoyed this. Music does it for me too - but can also make me terribly melancholy too. Hark at me - melancholy - spending too long on the poetry section I think.

Hi Lyn. I really enjoyed reading this piece. Sorry to hear that you had to go through so much but I am glad that you had the music to help you.

A really well written poem.

Nice to see you writing again. And of course I remember how important music was in all the books you wrote before.

Your poem is certainly uplifting.

I hope all is going well for you.

Thank you so much everyone, for your lovely comments and good wishes. Things are going very well at the moment, and my doctor is really pleased with me.

Although I love Pavarotti, and Bocelli, and of course the great Domingo, the singer in question is fairly new to the world of opera. His name is Alfie Boe, and he has one of the most beautiful tenor voices I have ever heard.
