Carrie was swimming in the open sea though she always feared it.
Challenging herself, she called it. Not a comfortable feeling at all
but facing the fears was what she had learned to be the best solution
to handle with them. She dived the waves but didn't dare to open her
eyes under water. Carrie was proud because she finally managed to shake
off another great fear again. She had trained her arms to be able to
keep swimming even if she would have cramps in her legs ... she had
trained her legs to be able to keep up even if she couldn't use her
arms anymore for any reason. She was prepared.
She knew that Paul was there, watching her from time to time but
mostly busy with something else. She felt safe with knowing him close,
was sure he would help her if something would happen. She would have
never dared to go and swim in the ocean without knowing somebody close
she trusted. And Carries fear went smaller and smaller ... she almost
felt good in the water, with the waves throwing her body in random
directions.
She noticed something touching her ankle and was suddenly a bit
frightened because she could imagine a lot there, in the dark depths of
the sea, but she didn't want to surrender, so she forced herself to
just go on. She couldn't ... that thing, wrapped around her left ankle,
held her back. She wasn't able to get rid of it, so hard she even
tried. She called Pauls name but swallowed a large gulp of salty water,
so all that was heard was "Pau ...". Paul looked up and saw her far
away, waving at him ... he waved back and went on with talking to
somebody on his cell phone. Another loud call was heard ... he smiled
and showed Carrie thumbs up, to let her know that he was proud of her,
then he turned around again.
After 10 more minutes, Paul finished the call and looked for Carrie
... he couldn't see her. He looked everywhere, in the water, at the
beach ... no Carrie. He ran up and down the beach and finally jumped
into the water to swim to the place he saw her last. No Carrie.
...
When they pulled her corpse out of the calm sea, 4 hours later, Paul
fell down on his knees and grabbed her to shake her back into life. Her
lifeless, cold body felt so strange in his arms. He noticed the seaweed
that was still wrapped around her ankle ... like the sea didn't want to
let her go anymore.
... and inside Paul died.
