Derdriu

Why do people always think they can prevent the future? Cyrus, Croesus, Oedipus... And Conchobar...

The branch was red, with the blood of princes.
The rock was red, with the blood of a lady.
Oaths were broken, champions banished.
Heroes were slain, clan-wars begun.

Who suffered most?
Naoise the killed?
Fergus the betrayed?
Connor the jealous?
Or Derdriu herself?

I think it's Cathbad
For he had known all

Well, Cathbad had forewarned them all when he said, just before she was born:

"Although the child is pure as a summer's morn, she will bring evil to all who love her. " Cathbad also declared to all there that night that much violence would accrue from this birth. May I ask how he knew though? How can you know before a child is born that it will give so much trouble in life?

Well done Fledermaus. More to think about.

You seem to have a knack for summarising myths and delving into them in a succinct way.

Thanks Josie and Phil.

You amaze me by how much you know about myths and such like. And then you turn them into poetry of your own.

I particularly like the first two lines.

Thanks Jean. It must be quite a curse to know the future, but be unable to change it... Poor Cassandra suffered from it, but I think Cathbad must have had the same problem here.
