The Mighty Monster - a poem for children
By Josie
06 July 2008

Firstly this poem is written with strong iambic metre and they can clap easily to the 7 iambic feet over 2 lines.  Secondly this could be used as a basis for writing a simple poem themselves, and thirdly I am working on games etc to help children with parts of speech.  I think parents, children and their teachers could get a lot from this one.

The sea’s a mighty monster who

   Likes roaming round our globe.

He carries fish and coral reefs

   Inside his watery robe.

Sometimes he slumbers in the sun -

   Perhaps you’ll hear him snore.

But listen out, for when he’s cross.

     His voice you can’t ignore.

His angry waves crash on the beach;

His hands thrash out in vain.

As if to join the irate scene

The clouds send down their rain.

The wind joins in the argument,

    Then ships are tossed about.

The lightning streaks across the sky

And the thunder starts to shout.

Sometimes this monster's gentle and

    You’d think it wasn’t true

That he had been be so angry, now

That all is calm and blue.

Beautiful, Josie, and somehow very deep!

The 'revered Joanna' has just seen it too and remarks on how good it is . . .

A niggle - you need another 'f' in the the intro - 'to start of' should read 'to start off'.

Cheers!

Thanks John. children could examine this and find out which words I have used which connect with humans, what they do and feel: "roam - carry - slumber - snore - cross. They could use these words in their poems, or try to list words which are similar, and even be taught how to use a thesaurus to vary the language. The other elements are personified too. I could see that this would be a good poem to use as a basis for their own poem (a mentor poem they call it don't they?)

Excellent poem. I love how you have used the weather elements to create the actions of the sea monster.
