Four minute warning
By AlisonKim
09 July 2008

Inspired by QI and Stephen Fry - there was never any such thing as a four minute warning.

Further note: According to someone, the UK would have received a four minute warning when a nuclear bomb had been launched. Though according to QI, this was never true.

I'm sorry? A what? A four minute warning? What are you going on about? Four minute warning  for what? I don't have time to be fussing about with warnings! There are so many things that need doing. I mean first of all there's.... No I'm sorry. Please don't interrupt me. I am too busy for this sort of thing. I have no idea what you are going on about you, you silly little man!.... Stop waving your arms about and jumping up and down like that, you look ridculous.. Good grief, no! Why on earth would I want to go with you anywhere.. I have a little more dignity than that...Yes, you said. A four minute warning. What do you mean?...Where? ...Up there... What?... That cloud? ...Oh, ..yes ..I see what you mean... Thank you ..Um, really ..must be going ..now.

I like the urgency in the piece. I can see the man jumping up and down and in my mind it's hilarious, but for people who have no idea what you're talking about, including me, this was all too a bit vague. But it's funny for sure.

Thanks TT.

Apparently, though not true, the UK would have received a four minute warning when a nuclear bomb had been launched. I think the idea of the four minute was made up by someone - though I'm sure someone out there knows more then me!

Thanks for the comments. Perhaps I shall put something about what title means in the intro.

Reminds me of Peter Cook's take on the "four minute warning", from Beyond the Fringe

I like this - there's quite a personality coming through although it's so short. I wonder if it could be extended to a monologue that runs just exactly four minutes? (I read it aloud, quite slowly, and got to one minute ten.)

Thanks Ainsel for the comments.

Interesting thought about the monologue. I think I might give that a go.

Cheers, AK :)

I love the way that TT can: like the urgency, see it in his mind as hilarious, but have no idea what you're talking about.
And never a harsh word was said!

True, without knowing what was going on, it can seem funny. I wanted to get across the ridiculousness of the MC and the sudden realisaiton of something happening which they had no idea about and now no time to prepare - even though it'd be completely futile to prepare for a nuclear bomb explosion.

I was hoping for a bit of both - the funny side, a bit ridiculous, yet also sympathy and maybe horror for the MC and their realisation.

Hope that comes across in the piece!
